A/N: Written for the Anime/Manga drabble tag using the pairing: Roy/Riza and the prompt: "It was a whirlwind"…though I was *this* close to taking the L/Light pairing instead. Also written for the 100_tales challenge on livejournal. prompt #023 – brown, for the same pairing.
In a Whirlwind
Riza covered her eyes as sand and the remains of shattered rock flew about. Sadly, it did little good; her palm could only cover so much, and it was difficult to prevent something she couldn't see. She could hear though, and while the flying grains were silent and non-lethal, she could hear bullets and the cracking air of alchemy - Roy's alchemy.
She cracked her eyes open, quickly sweeping the desert field. Coats of white were spread about, covering uniforms of gold and blue and she knew her allies were covering her. Some had guns; others were alchemist and fought only with their brains and hands - but it was they causing the most damage, she reflected. The snipers like herself were only mopping up what was left.
She caught a brown coat in the sand and pulled the trigger, being greeted by a blossoming circle of red before a snap of the fingers led the flame to swallow them. She closed her eyes a moment again, moist only because of the sand that had snuck in, then opened them again. To close one's eyes for too long on the battlefield meant death after all.
She had a gun in her own hands if she wanted to die. But there was someone she wished to protect, and it was towards a toga of cream white and accessorised with multiple colours that she pointed her weapon next.
