DISCLAIMER: I don't own Stargate or any of the characters and I'm not getting paid for this, so please don't sue me.
AUTHOR'S NOTES: Inspired by watching the Lost City and wondering what Sam was thinking. If any of this doesn't seem to fit, it's because I have no idea of what will happen in Season 8, choosing to remain spoiler free.

*******
Somehow, it didn't seem fair. He'd saved the world. Through one entirely unselfish act, he had saved the world. And in doing so, he had removed one of the biggest threats in the Galaxy. He'd saved countless lives through his actions, and yet... He was as good as dead, frozen inside that thing. The military would call it an acceptable sacrifice, one life for millions, but still... It didn't seem right.
She raised one hand to brush the barrier between them again. She was reminded of another time when they had been trapped on the mothership, either side of another barrier, the armbands that had allowed them in long since fallen off and useless. A similar sense of desperation filled her now as she gazed upon the frozen form of the man whose eyes had held so much emotion on that instance - fear, despair, love.
Her hand dropped down. She'd tried to tell him how she felt, before they'd been interrupted by Daniel and Teal'c. And then on the ship, she tried again. He said he knew, but she couldn't help but wonder if he really did. After all, his brain was being overwritten by the knowledge of the Ancients at that point. But she shouldn't torture herself like this. Thinking and wondering about might-have-beens wasn't going to bring him back.
A voice intruded on her thoughts. "Sam." It was Daniel. "They're recalling us back to the SGC." He laid one hand on her arm.
She pulled away, not allowing him to see the desperation in her eyes. "We can't just leave him here like this, Daniel!"
"I know." He spoke calmly, the voice of reason. "But we can't risk not going back. It's not Hammond any more."
"I know." He voice dropped to a whisper as the despair almost overwhelmed her. The SGC was changed for good, with the new woman in charge. Who knew what would happen to it now?
"Sam?" Daniel took her arm again. She allowed him to slowly lead her away. "We'll come back."
She looked back as she left, looking into the eyes she knew so well. They followed after her, pools of indescribable emotion staring at her, watching her go.
It didn't seem fair.
