*******

When Samantha Carter returned to her lab, there was a single deep pink rose sitting on her desk. She sighed and mentally cursed McKay. Would he never get the hint that she wasn't going to go out with him?

She moved towards her desk, and was about to pick the rose up when she stopped and took a closer look at the rose's 'vase'. A smile crossed her lips. The rose was standing in what had once been a very expensive piece of lab equipment. Which meant only one thing. Or rather, one person. The Colonel. She smiled again, and gently removed the rose from its makeshift holder.

Frankly, he was lucky that this piece of equipment had already been broken; otherwise he'd be costing the Air Force a lot of money. Laying the rose down on her desk, she peered into the tube before nodding to herself, satisfied. Even luckier that he hadn't put water in it in order to sustain the flower. The resulting explosion would be even more expensive. She laughed to herself, shaking her head. 'He may act dumb, but he's not stupid.'

"Who's not stupid?' A voice came from behind her. Not realising she had spoken aloud, Sam jumped in shock and spun around, only to be greeted by a pair of amused brown eyes watching her from behind the door. He leant against the wall, looking relaxed, his arms folded across his chest.

"Sir!" She exclaimed. "I didn't see you there."

"I know." He grinned. "I was wondering when you'd notice me." He walked over to her and looked down at the rose she held in her hands. "Anything I should know about, Carter?" His tone was light, teasing.

She smiled and feigned nonchalance, shrugging. "Must be from a secret admirer."

"Oh really?" He raised one eyebrow. "Maybe I should kick his ass." She laughed in response.

"I don't think that's necessary." She turned to face him, and her expression became a little more serious. "Thank you."

He looked a little embarrassed. "It was nothing. Just bumped into some guy selling them on the way to base this morning. He wouldn't stop harassing me until I'd bought one." His tone was careful, concealing the truth - that he knew how much of a hard time she'd been having lately; the time he'd spent outside the flower shop, agonising whether it was a good idea or not; the decision of colour… (Red is too romantic, yellow too casual.)

But it had all been worth it. Seeing the smile on her face as she picked it up: surprised yet pleased, her entire demeanour brightening as she found it. Yes, it had definitely been worth it.

Sam smiled, as Jack looked a little nervous now. He gestured towards the door. "I'd better go. Hammond wanted me to hand in some paperwork, and I should probably finish it." She grinned at him and nodded.

At the door, he turned back. "You know, you might want to put that in a vase." He gestured to the rose. "We wouldn't want to cause a stupid accident now, would we?" He stressed the word 'stupid' and she grinned.

"No sir." He nodded to her and left the room.

Sam took a seat at her desk, considering the rose for a moment before putting it firmly back into its makeshift vase.

After all, it was all part of his charm.

*It's* charm.

She meant its charm.

Really.
