Four years of partnership and he'd never seen her cry like this.
Kensi was sobbing into his shoulder, almost hanging onto him for dear life. Her body was wracked with shuddering tremors as she failed to choke back the tears that just kept coming.
And Deeks held her close as she cried, her head in his hands. He whispered words of comfort to her, rocking her back and forth and kissing her hair.
His mind wandered back to a moment months ago. He and Sam had been rescued from Sidorov just days prior. The two senior agents had left the bullpen, leaving just him and Kensi standing there. A long silence followed, neither wanted to acknowledge anything that had gone down over the past few days. The torture, the pain. The kiss. But she'd spoken out to him anyway.
"Listen, I know what you're going through." Kensi had looked at him with a worry he hadn't seen before.
And through those words, Deeks imagined her in his place, being tortured for information. Watching one of her team be tortured as well. Never breaking, no matter how much she wanted the pain to end. Never knowing if she would be rescued. Sure, she was strong. Strongest woman he had ever met. But no one could take something like that and live with it forever. Eventually, she would lose hope just like he had. Kensi, thinking she would die there in that room.
And he'd looked her in the eyes, with an honesty so pure it scared them both. "I really hope you never do."
Six months later, there she was, sobbing into his leather jacket. Kensi had been through it all, but never something like this. This was hell and back, and now both of them had experienced it. Watching someone she cared for be tortured, being tortured herself. She'd given up, she was almost sure of her death. Because even if Kensi made it out of that situation alive, she didn't know if she could ever live with the aftermath.
For days and weeks after they went home, Kensi would be plagued with nightmares, just as Deeks had. They would be vivid as the time she spent in Afghanistan, feeling so real. She would have restless nights and would wake up in the dark, screaming or crying or just white with fear.
But this time she wouldn't have to do it all alone. Because she would have her partner there, sleeping beside her. Holding her close, ready to bring her back to sleep. He had done it all before. He could help her forget.
So this time they would be there for each other. Deeks grabbed onto her hand and she held on tight. They went to mess holding hands, and they left the base camp holding hands. They stayed together, holding hands and didn't let go until they touched down at Edwards airport. And even then they'd still be together for eachother. Because neither of them would have to go it alone again.
Hey everyone, I hope you liked this story. Thanks for taking the time to read it. Reviews are very welcome.
"Spoils of War" was amazing. I was at the edge of my seat. And the Densi reunion was everything I could have asked for. Wonderful! I might not write for a while, I've got finals coming up in a week. 3 u all!
