Eluding the Future

Summary: Short post-battle moment.

Disclaimer: I clearly don't own Inuyasha or its characters.

He fell hard to the ground and without thinking she fell too, her back thumping against the grass and arm flinging to the side, over his chest.

That had been one full-on battle.

She felt his chest rise and fall, still recovering from the exertion before and she smiled that their heavy breathing should be in time. He was warm and she liked how soft his kesa felt against her sweaty arm. Without looking she knew he was staring at her.

He lifted a hand to her face and her eyes drifted shut with the first touch, his fingers brushing her fringe back.

"That was different."

She broke into a huge grin at his words, turning her head to see that he was watching her. "Thank you."

"I don't know what to say either."

She rolled her brown eyes and he knew her words would be cheek, "that's a first." He laughed anyway and slid closer knowing the others had gone some time ago.

"You know, I can't help but love you. Even when you're cruel."

She giggled a bit and raised her brows. "Cruel?" He nodded slightly. "I'll have you know you've done a lot of things to merit that reward." She directed her eyes at the covered hand that had sneaked its way to her waist, ready to delve lower to her behind.

But he just smiled.

"Houshi-sama," she warned, her curved mouth betraying her.

The caress was lighter than usual but he waited for her hand to strike regardless. It hung, suspended in the air and he was surprised when it descended to caress instead.

"I don't mind so much anymore." A lot of things had changed and he liked that she could admit it – it brought the warm pang of respect, adoration, want and need for this woman.

"I don't mind either." They smiled together, moved forward together and it wasn't long till they couldn't stand to be apart in more than one way. "I want you," he almost demanded, but the soft tone held more depth than she had previously thought possible.

"Promise you won't leave me." He held her gaze in askance and she stared back hard. That was her demand.

"I want us to never part." He knew it wasn't enough to satisfy her, yet he would never lie to her. "I can't make a promise I won't keep."

She looked away, even when he took her hand in mild apology. It was just another reminder of how precious their time together was, for that was the problem. Even as that hand touched hers through the dark fabric he denied wasn't as good as skin she knew it would tear them apart. It would tear him apart.

She would give him what he wanted, regardless of her own need, for ultimately his was hers and hers his. "I love you." It got easier to say every time.

"I love you too, Sango."
