Epilogue:
It was in the era where Enki has reigned over Makai. An after feast was celebrated in the unity of the three kingdoms. It is a first in history that the Makai was under one reign. However, despite the merry times—demons would always find ways to disrupt the peace. An oracle has foretold King Enki that another misfortune would befall the demon world. An ancient queen will be awoken in her slumber that could either bring about destruction or advancement.
"The queen shall break her icy seal, unleash a terror to behold. Devastation the world will feel, her story was left untold. A history masked in fear, a glorious reign betrayed. Her revenge you will hear, the debt will soon be paid."
King Enki has tasked his forces to search for any history of a long forgotten past. He requested retracing of previous kingdoms and any powerful demon sealed in antiquity. He has sought help from Koenma in hopes to find something in their archive. It was a little strange for Koenma not to find anything about this history of Makai. It is either an incredibly high level secrecy or it is deliberately removed from the archives of Spirit World. He has once again broke the news to Yusuke and the rest of the team to prepare for any imminent trouble—bigger trouble.
Chapter 1: Fubuki
It was dark at the base of Koorime Village, not because of night time but because of the merciless blizzard pouring relentlessly. A tall dark hooded figure does not seem to be fazed by the unnatural freezing temperature. He treaded the snowstorm like as if it's a bright and sunny day. His body was slightly leaned forward and his legs pumped full force against the snow. It is inhumanely impossible to walk let alone speed through the waist deep snow. However, he is no ordinary being—under his hood was a faint purple glow just right in his forehead. His jagan eye gave him full visibility despite the heavy veil created by the falling blizzard. He cursed under his breath, although his taller figure and longer legs propelled him more speed—it gave him a little bit more traction against the snow. He had to improve his area awareness even more with training. It wasn't as easy as it was a few years back when he was a foot shorter. The jaganshi—Hiei has matured and changed over the years and standing at 5ft 10. He used to sport this unnaturally long spiked hair like a rebellious punk—not that he stopped sporting a spiked hair, it doesn't stand up and gave him additional 5 inches anymore. His body has grown lean and stronger; he no longer looks like a teenage boy. Albeit his maturity, he is still a young demon. He was still a little bit annoyed as to why the koorime women had to mask their village with too much blizzard. He was thinking if they could just at least give it a break for a day in a year when he visits his sister. It doesn't help his mood that he has not had any proper sleep for three days. He had been having a nightmare of a woman calling to him with tears in her eyes. And just before she gets to reach him, he gets a painful stab right through his heart. He always wakes up in sweat and a linger pain in his chest. He would have liked a different form of dream with that ungodly beautiful woman. Ah yes, his body has indeed mature in so many ways—as a man too.
His jagan eye twitched as he saw a small feminine figure running down the slope and an unjustly humongous figure chasing it like a cat toying with its prey. The woman was crying for help, she looked like one of the koorime—a very weak one. Hiei naturally doesn't give two cents if she gets eaten or not but his consumed black dragon seemed to be responding violently towards the call. He cursed again and shifted his direction towards the commotion. He wanted to end it quick. The woman was already caught by the giant demon. The giant seemed to have other motives rather than just eating the woman. He seemed to like pealing a candy before devouring it. Hiei saw the giant removing the obi that ties her kimono in place. He felt disgusted and with a flash the giant seemed to have stopped moving. He didn't even felt his death coming. The oversized demon fell limp and lifeless, his black blood tainting the white snow beneath him. The woman had barely realized what happened. She scrambled to grab whatever is left of her dignity before facing her savior. Before Hiei could say a word, his tongue had seemed to tie itself in a loop when he saw the woman. It was the same silver hair that flow smoothly like the undisturbed water, the same pearl white skin, and the same icy blue eyes that ironically emanate warmth in them instead of its supposed cold demeanor. He took a step back and trying to recall if he was still dreaming. The woman had sprung out right from his dream and in to his reality. He immediately looked around in alarm and waiting for something to stab him through his heart. After quite a while of realizing that no threat is around he immediately turns to the woman.
"Who are you? Are you from the Koorime Village?" He gently sheathed his sword as to not alarm the traumatized woman.
"I don't know…" She spoke so softly but her answer gave him so much confusion.
"You…don't know your name?" He asked again, making sure he understood what she meant. And by it, it seems like she has no idea who she is.
"I woke up in this freezing cold, I have no idea where I am or who I am. I was wandering this place before that demon chased me." Her face was masked with genuine fear of the unknown.
Hiei had his guard up. This isn't looking good for her, knowing he dreamt of this woman long before. It could be a trap—she could be a witch. Their group has made a name and for sure they have made enemies from all types and sort. It was a wise decision to call Kurama and Koenma about this and visit his sister some other time. He's not letting this unknown woman set foot to where his sister is. He looked at her shivering form, her disheveled kimono was soaked and sooner or later she will freeze to death. He removed his cloak, this was the one Yukina made for him because of his constant complain about the blizzard. It was made with various youkai skin; it has an inner layer of soft insulating fur, a thick middle layer of leather and an outer layer of a smooth elastic skin that prevents water from soaking in.
"Stand." His order was short and monotone—a typical arrogant Hiei that he will never outgrow.
She fumbled around, making it a little difficult standing up with her heavy drenched kimono while gripping the sides as to not embarrass herself in front of a man she owed her life to. He noticed her difficulty and grabbed her arm. She whimpered when he suddenly yanked her upwards.
"Thank you." Her soft voice trembled.
"You will have to come with me. It is not safe for you here and I know people who may be able to help." He covered her with his cloak and lifted her in to his arms. This action created a yelp from her and which he felt a little conscious.
"Trust me, it's faster this way." He assured her and she gently held on to him.
It wasn't long until they reached the spirit world's headquarters stationed in Makai. Kurama greeted them about few meters away from the entrance with a fair warning. This was very unusual for Kurama to be in his youkai form and stopping them. Hiei stopped in his tracks and titled his head. Kurama slowly descended from the stairs and told him of a very interesting thing.
"Hiei, we can't take her here. There are weak demons working within the headquarters." Kurama's statement didn't make a sense to Hiei.
"So?" It wasn't his typical sarcastic retort but more of a very genuine confused one.
"If you never noticed, she is emanating a scent that seems to intoxicate weaker demons and getting them into frenzy within a certain distance from her." This explanation answered his prior question as to why Kurama is in his fox form. "Her pheromones." The last part caught him a little off guard.
"I am surprised that you are immune to it. It makes me question your taste and our long history and rumors." Kurama gave him a smirk and teased him about what people used to think of "them" together.
"Don't make me cut off your tail, fox!" Hiei was still annoyed that people normally thought of them as gay. They were both bachelors among the group and both are good looking in their respective genre. They were like the yin and the yang. Even Kuwabara has Yukina as a lover—well to Hiei's dismay.
"Anyhow, let us make her wear this for now." Kurama placed a beaded cuff on her wrist to suppress her female scent.
They entered the headquarters and she was helped by Koenma's maids. She wore a typical Kimono that most of the female maids wore. They didn't have anything that could match her beautiful drenched ones. She was thoroughly examined and found that she has suppressed memories. They couldn't identify what was the cause nor could they try to pry her mind open. Koenma decided it is safer for her to be in Genkai's temple where most of the group are staying. The beads are only temporary and will wear off in time. There's practically a safe net around the human world which prevents any demons from getting close to her. She seemed to be a weak class demon, almost human in strength. She doesn't even come close to the Koorime women despite of her features. The only inhuman in her is her goddess like features. With or without pheromones, she is a beautiful demon. Her silver hair framed her tiny face with a cute fringe covering a part of her forehead; it seemed to flow gracefully with her every move. It neatly falls until her waist like a straight peaceful waterfall. Her piercing blue eyes looked like the sky; it reminds you of a sunny day in contrast to a cold icy one. She has a petite figure, she moves with grace like royalty.
"The only problem we have is the portal to human world is currently closed. The gate is under repair for 2 days." Koenma rubbed his chin as if to feel a non-existent beard. Both Jorge and Koenma's eyes suddenly gleamed with mischievousness. "You can stay with us—ugh…" Koenma trailed off as they don't know her name.
"What shall we call her?" Kurama looked at the floor while searching for a name.
"Well, we can't call her Yuki—confuses me with Yukina." Jorge chuckled despite knowing that Yuki could be the perfect name for a woman that looked like a beautiful snow.
"Fubuki." Hiei said under his breath, almost whispering. Everyone stared at him and he felt awkward. "I met her during a blizzard—so, Fubuki it is." He looked away trying to conceal the impending red tint under his cheeks.
"I'd love that name." The woman smiled at her savior. Hiei couldn't hide anymore of his awkwardness and thought of something to change the topic.
"Kurama, can you take her in?" Hiei, evidently doesn't trust his own boss. He ignored the pout in Jorge and Koenma's face, not that Koenma's pout so obvious with that ridiculous pacifier on his mouth.
"Full moon, beautiful woman and Fox demon doesn't mix well this week. Since you're immune to her, I think no harm shall befall her even if she tries to seduce you." Kurama chucked while Hiei shot him icy glances. The woman only blushed. Kurama does have a promiscuous side to him and everyone knows how messy it could get. Hiei has no choice but to let her stay with him in his place.
Hiei took her to his place located in the isolated edge of the Forest of Fools. His house is covered with huge trees. You can barely tell there's a household within it. Hiei knew it's not a great place for a woman to stay in. His house is filled with random stuff from both Makai and Human world. He suddenly remembers that filthy human magazine Kuwabara and Yusuke brought with them.
"Can you give me a minute?" He asked her to stay by the door and zap through all the clutters in his house. After a while he opened the door for her and let her in.
His house looked like a tree grew on top of it. The walls are covered with the tree roots and the low wide braches loom over the whole vicinity. It is dark inside, and an occasional lightning illuminate the room. Hiei almost forgot that she isn't like him that can see through the dark house. He flicked his fingers and the candles lit up the hallway from the entrance.
The hallway is only about 7 steps in and ends where the round living room is located. It seems that the tree was carved from within. She looked up and was amazed that his entire house was built within the huge tree trunk. She looked around and found a bookshelf on the far edge to the right. She thought it was odd to see rectangular bricks inside it rather than scrolls. She tilted her head toward the center and wondered about this pure black painting. It doesn't seem to look like a painting. It's just pure black and it's not made of canvas. She approached it and touched the glossy surface. She jumped away when it flicked and saw a moving picture inside it. She ran towards him and hid behind his back.
"Why are people trapped inside?" She cowered in fear but was even more scared when Hiei started to chuckle.
"I'm sorry, I scared you. It is what humans called a flat television. It is a modern way of showing a play." He showed her the remote that sends signal to the small box underneath the television.
"So this tiny thing with bean shaped things sticking on it controls this tiny box and puts things in to the te-le…tele…" She trailed off and unsure as to what the object is called.
"Television..." He completed her sentence and motioned her to follow. On the left side was a doorway right underneath the stairs. The doorway was going towards the dining room and the kitchen. The dining room and kitchen was only separated with a counter. Although, Hiei doesn't seem to like cooking—his sister visits him with Kuwabara. She does have the fascination to make meals for the two men she loves the most. She even tucked away some recipes and makes sure that her brother's fridge is filled with necessary food. This part of the house has become natural for Hiei but it's an entire different world for Fubuki.
"This is where we eat, and that place is where you can cook—if you feel like it. Most of the food is prepared and is inside that fridge." He looked at her and she was staring blankly at him with her head on the side. He sighed knowing she may not understand what a fridge is.
He motioned her to come close. She followed him toward this weird wardrobe looking thing with handle bars on them. She thought it was a little slender for a wardrobe. Color left her face when she thought that it must have been a coffin standing upright.
"No!" She yelped when he opened one of the compartments of the fridge. He was equally surprised.
"This is, ugh…where we keep food." He gently pried her hands off her face. He told her what the purpose of a fridge is and that she is free to eat whatever is inside.
"So this coffin is not a coffin but a food container? It's cold." She shivered and stepped away from it.
"It is meant to keep the food fresh." He grabbed one microwavable food that Yukina prepared for him. He figured it would be the best thing to eat there and show her how it tastes.
He grabbed her wrist and dragged her to the counter where the microwave is. She watched him unseal the small box of food and put it inside.
"Now, this one is my favorite. I don't cook so this thing does it for me." He explained that this box helps him to warm the food from the fridge.
"That is great! The fridge keeps the food fresh but cold—then this thing warms it." He watched her eyes gleam with amusement. The microwave beeped twice and he took out the food for her. He led her to the table and gave her chopsticks. Yukina made a buttered chicken with seasoning on top of fried rice. Hiei grabbed some of those human sauces Yusuke brought and rummaged the fridge again for one of his favorite dessert—pudding. He put the sauce on top of the chicken and told her to eat. He knows she hasn't eaten any meal.
"This is delicious!" She happily took the bowl in her hand and started to dig in more. Hiei liked it when people say that his sister's cooking is awesome.
"Try this." He opened the pudding for her when she finished her meal. He gave her a teaspoon for the small dessert. She was a little hesitant at first. This food is soft, almost gooey like and yellow. She looked at it and was thinking of monster goo. She swallowed hard before scooping a portion and putting it in her mouth. To her surprise, it tasted really sweet and it melted in her mouth.
"What is this? This is heavenly!" She looked like a child having her first fill of candy.
"They call it pudding. If you like these types of food—you'll probably have fun in the human world." He grabbed all the dishes she finished and guided her back to the living room.
"I only have one room, so you'll have to use for now. I'll sleep here in the living room." She silently followed him towards the stairs they passed by. The second floor is overlooking the living room below and has two rooms. The first room to the right of the stairway looked like a study. It has bunch of papers and scrolls. A desk was situated to the far end in proximate to the large overlooking window.
The end of the hallway was a door which she assumed to be the room. She watched how the back muscles ripple under Hiei's clothes. Each stride he took never failed to flaunt confidence and arrogance in them. She just noticed how dangerous this man can be as an enemy. She was glad to have owed him her life. She was a little lost in her thoughts and accidentally bumped her face right to his back. He wasn't even startled at the fact that he knew she never stopped pacing after his pause. He looked down at her rubbing her nose in a numbing pain. He didn't seem to want to address what just happened—dismissing it as insignificant. He opened the door for her and gently moved to the side so she could peer through. He gestured her to go inside. The room was filled with bleak colors—black, gray and a little bit of white. It wasn't a big room considering it's meant to be a home for one man. A bed is at the far left corner and a cabinet on the far right. At the end of the room was a huge balcony door that somewhat gave the room more light.
"The sheets are new. If you need more blanket, feel free to open that cabinet on the other side. Do not leave the balcony door open when you sleep—sometimes strange things come out of the water." She tilted her head when he said something about the water. Noticing this question on her mind—he went to open the balcony and showed her that his house was at the very edge of the town and is found at the hill where there's a deathly drop to the water below.
"Thank you so much for your kindness. I don't know how I'll ever repay you—I have nothing." She bowed her head.
"If you want to take a bath, just go to the right hallway from the living room—opposite the kitchen hallway." Hiei was never good at dealing with people thanking him. "I'll be downstairs if you need anything." He closed the door to give her privacy and time to relax.
She tucked her hair behind her ear and walked towards the bed. It was soft and it really feels comfy. She took off her yukata and only had her nagajuban on. She didn't have any other clothes so she may need to find extra. As soon as she hit her head on the pillows—she went into sleep. She felt very tired being chased by the monster earlier that day.
Hiei treaded the stairs and removed his cloak, removed his upper shirt and kicked his boots. He slumped down the couch with his arms at the back of his head, his feet was dangling on the opposite arm rest. He thought that this was the first time he brought a woman in his house—well apart from his sister. His escapades are usually done in his spare time either in Gandara, Tourin or Alaric. Not that he considers her to be those types of one night stand women; honestly she isn't even for that purpose. It just bothers him that there's a woman in his house, in his room, in his bed—a beautiful woman. The last thought trailed off to a wrong way. He swallowed hard and shook the image out of his head. He turned to his side and willed himself to sleep.
"Kurai…Kurai…wake up." Hiei opened his eyes and was surprised to see Fubuki waking him up. He looked around and the place seemed different. It wasn't his living room. It was in a bright sunny place. It doesn't seem to be the demon world at all. What is even stranger though was Fubuki. She was clutching a blanket around her. The realization of her state made Hiei's blood run high to his head. She was naked underneath that blanket. If it were only possible, Hiei would have blood oozing out of every hole in his head. He tried to recall how his previously dirty thoughts run wild and made him see things in his dream. He backed away from her when she crawled closer and reached out to him. Luckily she is still clutching the blanket around her.
"Kurai? What's wrong?" To his dismay, the place they were in was a little crowded. He felt the walls behind his back as she trapped him in. She stared at him lovingly and leaned closer for a kiss. Hiei's breath hitched and sweat began to form in his forehead. Why is he hesitating to touch this woman even if it's in his dream? He started to accept this once in a lifetime sin that he may want to really commit. Right before her lips touches his—Hiei woke up. He tensed sensing that his body is almost at the edge of the couch. His reflexes prevented him from moving further back and fall on his bottom. He realized that it was morning when he awoke. He sensed a faint energy coming towards the living room.
"Good morning…" Fubuki greeted him with a slight bow in his direction. The tips of her hair were wet; she was only wearing her nagajuban. He noticed that she never brought any clothes with her.
"Get ready, we're going somewhere—be done in 15 minutes." He grabbed his boot and upper shirt then went to the direction where she came from. She just bowed in agreement.
A few minutes passed, she figured he led her to a trading area. There are demons crowding the place—trying to buy whatever valuables they may find. When they reached the corner of the trading post; demons seemed to sense their presence. Hiei was of course a quite famous S-Ranked demon—the only one to master the Kokuryuha and endured a jagan implant.
"Calm down…no heads are flying today. I just want to buy something." Hiei's presence parted the crowd and making it easy for him to walk around.
Every demon started to feel at ease and stopped minding them. However, some were staring at the woman walking behind Hiei and wondered who she was. She can feel their gaze and can hear them whisper—it was hard to tell what they were talking about. Hiei ignored the attention and proceed towards the biggest tent in the area. She almost ran towards him noticing the distance between them. She looked around while Hiei was talking to the peddler. The display was arranged in three rows back to back. In the middle row of the display, she found a very beautiful kanzashi. It was made of pure silver and has the adornment of three flowers carved from shells that are painted in a somewhat translucent mint blue. In the middle of the flowers where diamond like crystals shaped into a hexagonal cut. The shidare is made of flower and beads that are dangling beneath the flower ornament. She held the delicate piece in her hand and marveled at its beauty. She didn't notice that Hiei is done with his transaction and was looming over her back.
"Can you wait for me outside and hold this for a while." He handed her a bag that contains 3 red boxes inside. They were a little bit heavy. She struggled lifting it outside the tent. It didn't take long for Hiei to go out and take the bag from her. He urged her to go ahead. They walked silently back to Hiei's place. It is as a matter of fact an awkward silence for a while now. Hiei stiffens as he felt multiple weak auras following them. His jagan eye glowed and he immediately scans the surrounding. Despite being strong, he knows that it will be difficult to massacre everyone with Fubuki around. There are at least a thousand weak spirits and incoming. He suddenly notices the faint smell—he sniffed through and gazed at her. He grabbed her wrist and found that the warding bracelet is wearing off. He was a little glad that her aroma does not affect him as much as weak demon does. She has this tantalizing pheromone that smells like a white gardenia. He immediately tied the bag behind him and carried her. It hurts his damn pride to run away but he has no choice. She is practically defenseless—all she has is this scent which is the main cause of his problem.
"Whatever demon ancestry you are from—it sucks." He cursed under his breath. She was a little agitated but he did make sense. "Grab inside my chest pockets for the communicator and press the green button."
"Uhm…" She was a little awkward but she felt the urgency.
"Hurry!" He was already scowling. She immediately did as she was told. She didn't have time to appreciate the feel of his chest muscles but it did send electric impulses on her face. Once she took the cursed thing that put her in a situation—she pressed the button. Soon after pressing the button Koenma's face appeared on the screen.
"Hiei! What is the emergency?! We're sort of busy here!" The spirit realm headquarters looked disarray from behind.
"I have no time, we're being chased by demons—her scent is stronger! Soon after, stronger ones are going to get intoxicated! Open the barrier now!" Hiei noticed that the spread distance of her scent is getting bigger.
"Hiei, the gate is still an hour away from restoration. If I transport you, it could put your life in danger—knowing you are an S-class demon. It is going to be more painful without the gate fully functioning!" Koenma hoped Hiei would stall for an hour.
"There is no time, Koenma! Open the portal on my coordinates!" Hiei hissed and Koenma's face paled thinking he might lose a valued ally. He gave the order and opened the gate. Hiei and Fubuki's figure disappeared as if there was a rip in space. The intoxicated demons snapped out of their trance and wondered why there are so many of them gathered.
Genkai was peacefully sipping her tea when she noticed a pulsating ripple on the far east of her garden. She felt Hiei's familiar aura dwindling and another weak aura she can't quite put her thoughts on.
As soon as they passed through the barrier, Hiei settled her down on the ground. She looked at him worriedly; her heart sank when he collapsed on his knees after taking two steps. She felt a strong surge in her head and her eyes went hazy. Her vision flickered and what seemed to be Hiei's form was of another man. He had the same black hair as Hiei; only it is long tied neatly to a pony tail. He was also kneeling and in pain. The place didn't look like where they landed. It looked as if it is in a center of a palace platform. There was a man on the side holding a sword with blood dripping on it. He was adorned with silver and gemstones. He has silver hair that seemed to be similar to hers. Her vision snapped back when she noticed an old woman approaching them.
Genkai glanced at the person behind Hiei, she doesn't seem to be of threat. She looked helpless. Hiei was on his knees and in unbearable pain.
"You! Help me carry him to the temple!" Genkai's raspy voice ordered Fubuki. She immediately bent her knees down beside Hiei and wrapped his left arm around her shoulder.
"I'm sorry…I'm so sorry…Hiei!" Tears were dropping from her eyes and fall to the ground like crystals. Genkai quietly picked them up out of curiosity and silently walked with them.
Genkai received a call from Koenma about what happened the past days and who Fubuki is. Genkai have not said anything to Koenma about her suspicion about Fubuki. She undoubtedly does not emit any demon energy. There is energy but it is not demonic. It is different and one of a kind. She watched her wipe Hiei's forehead with a cool towel. She looked very devastated and shaken. Hiei seemed to have calmed down but he was very weak. The barrier had sucked most of his energy. He is as weak as a human. Koenma had informed Genkai that Yukina won't be able to heal Hiei. The only working portal is between the human world and the spirit world. The Makai portal went to overdrive because of Hiei's demonic power. However, he was able to create another bead bracelet that is stronger. Although, Fubuki is in the human world—there are other weaker demon that are trapped. It was already night time when Koenma visited Genkai's temple along with Kurama. It wasn't long until the rest of the gang came running when they heard what happened to Hiei.
"Fubuki, it is me—Kurama." Fubuki's eyes were red and swollen from crying. There seemed to be a question in them that begged Kurama for an explanation.
"This is my human form." Kurama gently placed the new bracelet on her wrist. "It is not your fault. Hiei decided it would be the best decision to transport you—otherwise, you would be dead. He will be fine."
"I'm sorry…" She hugged her knees tighter and refused to leave Hiei's side. Kurama felt helpless for the girl.
Deep in her heart, she could not understand this crushing pain when she looked at Hiei's weakened state. She was even more confused when she hallucinated about a different place the moment she saw him fall. She doesn't know who she is or if there is something she could do to suppress her scent. Her vision slowly darkened and the last thing she heard was Kurama's faint voice calling her name…no, the name Hiei gave her.
