This prologue is what happens when the asteroid hits, and the later chapters will be the aftermath.
I don't own We All Looked Up.
Eliza saw it happening first. Ardor was getting bigger and bigger.
It was coming.
Their little karass had made peace with it, but it appeared that most people at The Party at the End of the World hadn't. People started screaming-in fear, now, rather than the joy that had been clear earlier-and running, as if they could escape it in another part of the city. Logic had no place in this new world in the last few minutes. Logic didn't matter, and neither did faith. Emotions ran high and governed everyone's choices. Even if the asteroid didn't hit, the world had already ended.
The park was cleared quickly. Anyone who had any loved ones left ran to them, hoping to spend their last minutes alive with those who mattered most.
Misery was the one to point out how it started burning when it entered the atmosphere. If you weren't worrying about dying, you could look at it and appreciate the beauty of it. Eliza sighed as she realized this.
"I seriously wish I could take a picture of this, right now," she said to the others. None of them were surprised, she always wanted to take photos, and this would be the perfect end to Apocalypse Already.
Nobody else spoke until the asteroid was taking up more space in the sky than the sun normally did.
Andy took a deep breath and spoke. "I'm really, really glad that I met you all," he began. "I know, it sounds cheesy, but it's true. Without all of you, I would still be a slacker kid, and I would probably just be smoking weed with Bobo, ignoring our doom. I would be too high to care about whether I lived or died. Thank you guys so much."
Anita reached beside her and grasped his hand. Then she used her other hand to grab Eliza's. Eventually, they were all holding hands, staring up at the sky.
"Facing the end together," Misery said, "huh."
With a few more smiles at each other, they all turned their faces skyward and watched the world come to an end.
Last thoughts raced through their minds.
Eliza wondered if Peter's beliefs were right, and if so, would she see him in the afterlife?
Misery reflected on her life and regretted every moment she had spent as Bobo's bitch.
Andy thought about Anita, and how glad he was that he had finally figured out that it was her he liked. (He also regretted being Bobo's bitch.)
Anita wished that she had broken free of her parents' control sooner.
Peter was dead.
Bobo was dead.
Countless others were dead.
The end of the world really had come.
Now was the time to face it.
