LOOK AT THIS – I'M BACK! And I'm here to fix Be MY Valentine! All chapters have been deleted, and Chapter one has been fixed and edited tremendously over this Thanksgiving weekend! So, here's new chapter 1!
The wind blew fiercely on that Monday in February, having the world famous Sonic the Hedgehog run down the sidewalk to the school's entrance doors to free him of the outside elements.
The warm gust of the buildings heat greeted him, warming the cold tips of his ears. He loathed Mondays - especially being a sophomore in high school. To make things worse, Valentines Day was Friday, and by school policy, they just had to celebrate it.
The five minute bell echoed from down the hallway. Making the blue speedster pick up his pace, weaving through his classmates to his locker on the other end. Holding his combination lock in his hand and turning the dials, a gloved hand tapped his shoulder and ruined his concentration.
"5 minutes again, Sonic? You know, for being the 'fastest thing alive,' you're pretty slow." Sonic smirked, turning to meet the face of one of his best friends, Knuckles, who stood there with a sarcastic grin.
"Well, I could move faster," said Sonic, reaching again for the combination lock on his locker, "but Monday isn't worth it."
"What's not worth it?" Another voice asked. Sonic glanced upwards, seeing the familiar upturned quills of his locker mate, Shadow.
"Monday." Sonic answered, hearing his lock click and pop open as he dialed the last number. He jiggled the handle on the door and swung it open, letting a small red heart flutter to the ground by his feet. Knuckles gasped sarcastically, pointing to the heart with one hand, the other covering his muzzle.
"What's this? Sonic has an admirer!" Sonic rolled his eyes, bending down to pick up the colored paper. He moved his hand to crumple it, but Shadow put out a hand in protest.
"Read it." Sonic scoffed and straightened out the paper, taking a moment to skim over the words.
"Says: 'Be My Valentine.'No name or anything." He answered, crumpling it again and tossing it into the waist basket beside his locker.
"Speaking of valentines, anyone got a date to that dance on Friday?" Shadow asked, crossing his arms and leaning against the locker. Knuckles grinned.
"Me? I've got it covered, it's this blue one over here you should be asking." Sonic smiled, then made a big deal over scanning the crowds in the hallway.
"Huh, I guess I did forget a date," He smirked. Looking over their heads and pointing at people who passed by, "Come to think of it, where's that pretty little white bat at-!" Knuckled growled, punching Sonic in the shoulder with enough force to make him take a few steps to the side to regain his balance.
"Ow, it was a joke!" Sonic winced, rubbing his tender shoulder.
"Better be," Knuckles grumbled, crossing his arms. Sonic looked up at Shadow, who winked and stood up.
"Your right Knuckles," Shadow started, coming around to stand by the blue hedgehog. "It better be a joke, because as far as I know, I've got her reserved for Friday." Sonic busted into laughter, making it contagious to Shadow as they weaved through crowds and ran down the corridor to Algebra, a furious red echidna following in pursuit behind them.
Laughing, the two hedgehogs ran in the door and took their seats across from the still fuming echidna as the bell rang. In sync with the bell, a plump, peach-colored fox, Mr. Dorworth, made his way to the front of the room to begin his lecture. Sonic sighed and flipped his Algebra book to a random page in the middle, placing his notebook on top so he could take notes, which more often than not turned into doodling.
Nearly finishing what Sonic himself thought to be impressive, a gloved hand tapped his side. He glanced over and noticed a yellow hedgehog with bright, hazel eyes with long blond hair put up into a high ponytail, some of the hair swooping out to cover her right eye. The bottom part of her ponytail was all a dark, blood red, like she had a peek-a-boo. She smiled, holding up her notebook that contained a doodle that would make Da Vinci jealous. He stared and mouthed the word 'wow,' making her smile. She placed her notebook down on her books and pointed towards his notebook. Embarrassed, he held up his portrait of squiggles and stickmen that littered the page. She placed a hand over her mouth to stifle a giggle. Sonic rolled his eyes and stuck his tongue out at her in a childish way, making her giggle even more.
"Ember! Sonic!" The sharp voice of at the front of the room caught everyone off guard, blanketing the room in silence as they all turned to stare at the yellow and blue hedgehogs in the back of the room that had their heads down, ears slightly flattened.
"Mind telling me what has you both in fits and giggles?" Sonic kept his head lowered and took a glance over at the yellow hedgehog, apparently named Ember. She met his gaze for a moment before flattening her ears more and looking away. Mr. Dorworth cleared his throat.
"Hopefully there will be no more distractions, then. Now, take out your review notes from sections 4 – 6 and place them on the corners of your desks." Sonic sighed and leaned down to grab his trapper keeper from the rack below his chair. He filed through the folders, not seeing the review from Friday. He frowned, looking through his folders again. Where were his notes? He thumbed through about half of the folders when it struck him. He'd given the notes to Tails last night to help him study for his Algebra test, and the fox hadn't given them back either. He groaned and leaned back in his chair, mentally cursing himself. His ears twitched when Mr. Dorworth coughed, staring down at him and holding out his hand for a paper. Sonic just stared at his hand.
"No paper, I'm guessing?" Sonic sighed.
"No, sir." A moment of silence loomed over them before a green slip landed in front of him.
"Detention is your punishment, you know this correct?"
"Yes sir." The fox continued walking down the row, leaving Sonic to place his head down onto his desk. His ears twitched when they caught the faint sound of laughter, and he picked up his head to see Knuckles grinning, mouthing the word 'Karma' over and over. Sonic shot him a glare that only made the echidna's grin grow wider.
The bell rang, signaling the students to leave their classrooms. Sonic stood up and shuffled out the door, ignoring the echidna behind him who was practically on the floor with laughter from his own jokes towards the other.
"Sonic!" a small voice yelled from down the hall, belonging to his little brother, Tails. Sonic stopped and stood by the wall, watching the kitsune run down the hall, papers in hand. "Here," Tails panted, "Here's your notes."
Sonic grabbed the papers. "Thanks, you know, these would have been nice to have BEFORE I got detention!" Tails lowered his ears.
"Sorry. If it helps, I got an A on my Algebra test!" Sonic rolled his eyes and sighed.
"Oh, that just made my day so much better."
The day drug on slowly, torturing the blue hedgehog who just wanted the last bell to ring so he could go to detention and get the day over with. Lucky him, Mr. Dorworth had detention this week, and his punishment was to write on the board why he was a distraction, all the while dodging the sptballs Scourge kept shooting into his quills. When his time was finally over, he practically shot out of the room like a bullet, still running his hands through his quills to rid himself of the disgusting spit wad projectiles.
He grabbed his lock and spun the combination in, hearing the lock click then spring open, letting another heat flutter out; this one purple.
'Be mine?'
Sonic scoffed and rolled his eyes, crumpling up the heart and throwing it into the trash and grabbing his homework. He closed his locker and looked into the trash bin at the purple ball, but shrugged and walked down the corridor to the main entry doors. Whoever was leaving the hearts, probably Amy or Sally, must be desperate for a date to the dance. He opened the doors of the school to be met by the cold wind of outside, running home to finish his homework, leaving the school empty but for one lone figure. Their eyes hovered over the heart crumpled in the waist bin. The heart they had worked up enough courage for to put in the locker before school. Slowly, a gloved hand reached down and retrieved the fragile note, smoothing out the paper to stare at the smudged and running ink of words that took them forever to put on paper. Growling, they kicked the trash bin and stomped down the corridor, the note in a death grip in their hand.
The character known as Ember belongs to me.
