Time's Up
by TacomaSquall
I hear the ticking of the clock
As it marches forward tonight.
I am ordered to end a life -
One death to prevent countless others.
Why am I the only one who knows her?
We were all there together,
Brought up by her in the orphanage -
Casualties of the war against Adel.
Something has happened to her -
Something terrible and mysterious,
Changing her from the woman who taught us
Into a monster bent on domination.
So much is riding on this one shot -
Too many lives are at stake to pause.
If I don't do the job, who will?
If I falter, how many will pay the price?
The clock rises into place now,
The parade is moving forward -
Into the trap we have engineered,
Into the crosshairs of my rifle.
Matron, forgive me for the decision -
This choice I wish I could pass over.
As long as you live, the terror goes on.
And the price of my mercy is unthinkable.
