It was night

It was night. As usual, a certain mage would sit at the window and glance out, looking at the sky. He was always deep in thoughts. Whenever he has his time alone, never did a smile creep on his face. He was worried. He was worried of what to come. He was worried what misfortune would befall on them this time. He was…after all…a taboo. The cost of all pains and suffering.

"What are you thinking about, mage?" Kurogane spoke, leaning against the door frame with arms crossed.

"Eh?" Fai turned with a small smile on his face. "Kuro-rin is worried?"

"Quit the act. What's bothering you?"

"Nothing, Kuro-chan. Just wanting some time alone," Fai looked out at the sky again.

"Your mask can't fool me, magician…," Kurogane's voice was low, icy in fact.

Fai's eyes turned serious and the smile had vanished. He looked at the sky. Why was the swordsman so concern? Fai sighed and rested his hand on the window sill, supporting his weight.

"You said it doesn't concern you…So why are you asking…Kurogane?" he spoke with an emotionless tone.

"Because you are affecting the kids. Syoaran and Sakura are both worried."

"Oh? So you are not?"

"Don't try to change the subject, mage."

"My life…Isn't worth of living. That is what's on my mind…," Fai looked Kurogane firmly in the eye.

"Why do you say that?"

"I only bring people suffering…I am a taboo. From where I came from, people had always said that. And now…I am sure of it…," again, his eyes turned back to the sky.

Heavy footsteps were heard. It was fast. Fai felt a strange power and when he turned, a hand was heading towards him. He closed his eyes tight and waited for the heavy blow, but it never came. Instead, he heard a loud crack on his left side. He opened his eyes and saw Kurogane in front of his face, with his hands against the wall.

"Kuro-!"

"Listen here! I told you once what I hated. And the most of what I hate…Is when people take their lives too lightly. If we are going to travel together, you had better push that self-pity aside!" his eyes burnt with rage.

Fai face turned from shock to a soft expression. He smiled and closed his eyes. He opened it again and Kurogane saw the softness in the mage eyes. It wasn't that stupid mask the mage had on all these while…it was a genuine smile with a genuine expression. He wondered why couldn't the mage do this often. It looks better than the mask he's been wearing.

"Kuro-myuu…You are a really kind soul…," Fai said softly.

"W-What…?!" Kurogane blushed and pulled back.

"Oooh? Kuro-myuu blushing?" Fai teased.

"Shut up, you stupid magician!"

"It's Fai."

"Eh?" an irritated voice from Kurogane.

"My name is Fai," another genuine smile.

"Why should I call you that? You hardly call my name properly," Kurogane sat on the bed.

"Kuro-rin is mean!"

"What I said…," Kurogane's voice turned serious.

"Eh?" Fai asked with the smile still on his face.

"I mean it. We are stuck together for a long time…So push whatever nonsensical thoughts that you have. Life isn't to be taken for granted."

"Hai, hai…Kurogane-sama."

Kurogane stood up and walked away. Fai looked at him with the smile and once the swordsman was out of sight, the smile disappeared immediately and was replaced with a smirk. His bangs covered his eyes while the moonlight shines against his blond locks and his pale skin.

"That…is easier said than done…Kuro-sama…," he whispered to practically no one.
