She looked out as she slowly let out a breath, the air that escaped her lips turning into a gentle white fog as it hit the cold. It was always so much colder by the water, but she didn't mind. It almost felt good, the way it slipped right passed her jeans and her jacket, got right down into her skin and made it's home in her bones. She knew her lips quivered and her cheeks were most likely becoming an irritated red shade, but she didn't get up and find any warmth.
No. She stayed seated on the edge of the concrete wall, her lanky legs dangling over, lightly swaying back and forth. Her hands, adorned with black gloves, rested on the cold surface on each side of her, keeping her balance as she slightly leaned forward, her gaze taking in the sight of the snow white moon caressing the black waters with it's celestial light.
The faint yet steady breeze slipped through her crimson hair like a lover's, her lover's, fingers did when they laid together. A few strays brushed against her cheek like a kiss and a smile crept onto her mouth, a sad reminiscent kind of smile.
She heard the rustling in the leaves that belonged to the tall oaks and maples behind her and the lapping of the small waves against the wall. They were soothing sounds, especially together. The only sounds. The neighborhood her back was facing was desolate, the patrons either spending their time elsewhere or staying warm and cozy in their homes.
Home. She wanted to go home, but it was really just a house when he wasn't there. She knew she had to go back eventually tonight, but for now she would stay here, where the cold, the wind and the moon's light was like a hug.
Her hug couldn't protect her from everything though. The sound of footsteps crept up on her, causing her heartbeat to quicken in pace just a little. She was sure they would just pass her. They were most likely just taking an evening stroll. If they weren't though, she would be able to handle it. She could defend herself, everyone who knew her knew that, so she didn't worry. Besides, she was sure they were just walking with no reason to have anything to do with her.
The footsteps grew closer and she realized that they sounded... Familiar. No. They couldn't be but... They had to be. The footsteps became louder and louder as they continued to make their way towards her. They came right behind her before they suddenly stopped. She didn't even glance over her delicate shoulder to see who it was. Instead, she waited for them to speak.
However, instead of hearing words, she felt a hand cup her shoulder. The hand was heavy but not uncomfortable. She knew who it belonged to and she knew what the gesture meant. Her hand, so much smaller in comparison, rose up and gripped onto his securely. She felt him give her a little squeeze and finally, she looked over her shoulder and up into his cerulean eyes, and she knew everything would be alright.
