Humphrey sat perched atop a hill looking down at the rest of the pack, the magnificent moon shining brilliantly in the sky. He just got back from Idaho with Kate about a week ago and life was rough. Kate was married to Garth as soon as she got back and Humphrey wondered if his time with Kate meant anything.
"It meant something to me..." Humphrey whimpered, watching the many wolves from the Western and Eastern pack going back to their dens for some rest.
Humphrey decided earlier in the day that he was going to leave the pack for good. His heart hurt too much seeing Kate and Garth together. He didn't know where to go, but he thought anywhere then here was good.
Humphrey heard the familiar whistle of the train in the distance, signaling to him that the train to anywhere-but-here-ville was approaching. Humphrey took one last look at the pack that raised him and started to walk to the train.
"Shakey, Salty, and Mooch...I'm gonna miss you guys."
TRAIN TRACKS IN JASPER
The familiar railroad gave Humphrey a sting of painful memories from his journey with Kate. He shook those memories out of his head and decided to lay down and wait for the oncoming train. When he finally felt at rest on the grassy Jasper floor, he heard a rustle come from the bushes. Humphrey's ears perked up listening intently for more noises when a familiar face popped out of the thick tree line surrounding the train tracks.
"Winston?"
"Humphrey, where have you been? I need your help calming down some Alphas." Winston said, unfazed by where he located Humphrey.
"Sorry Winston, but I've decided to leave the pack.", Humphrey said, standing on all four legs so he could be level with the former pack leader.
"W-What?", Winston asked flabbergasted.
Humphrey frowned and replied, "It's time for me to move on, no offense but I cannot stand pack life anymore."
"Is that the real reason for leaving the pack, Humphrey?", Winston asked, a knowing look on his face.
"Is this about Kate and Garth?"
Humphrey eyes shot open wide and with a face full of guilt, he looked away from the senior wolf.
"Okay, now that makes more sense. Look Humphrey, Alph-"
"Alphas go with Alphas and Omegas go with Omegas, I know, I've heard that too many times to count", Humphrey responded, sinking back onto his hind legs, a depressed look on his face. Winston's face fell into a frown.
"Sorry Humphrey, pack rules are pack rules, no exceptions." Winston softly replied.
It was quiet for a minute or two after that.
Winston finally broke the silence, "Where are you going to go?"
"Wherever the train takes me I guess", Humphrey replied staring at the bright moon above the two wolves.
"Well, I know a of a place I found when I was a young wolf like yourself. It's gotta cozy den, a nice river, and plenty of caribou." Winston said.
"Oh yeah? Where might this place be?" asked Humphrey, now listening intently.
Winston smiled and responded, "About a half a day train ride up these very tracks."
"Thanks Winston, I appreciate it." Humphrey responded, standing up and stretching his legs.
"I'm going to miss you Humphrey, you were my best Omega." Winston responded, a wistful look in his eyes.
A loud whistle signaled the arrival of the train, which could also be seen speeding down the tracks.
"Thanks Winston, I'm going to miss you too. You were like the father I never had, Ha ha", Humphrey responded, laughing nervously. The old wolf smiled wide, and gave the young Humphrey a salute. Humphrey nodded back and sped off down the tracks, matching the speed with the train. Winston was impressed.
"He could've made a fine Alpha with that speed..." Winston thought regretfully to himself.
Winston shook his head of that thought and smiled.
"Come back Humphrey. Come back stronger and rejoin your family."
WITH HUMPHREY
"Heres the boxcar!" Humphrey thought to himself, before making a dive into said boxcar. He crashed roughly on the hard train floor and sprawled out on the ground.
"I can't believe I actually made it..." Humphrey thought to himself, exhausted.
Humphrey turned to the view outside the boxcar and saw the familiar light of the moon shining on him.
"It looks just like the time me and Kate-" Humphrey cut himself off. The painful sting of the memory of the wonderful howl him and Kate had on the train ride back to Jasper made Humphrey groan with grief.
Humphrey repositioned himself to where he was now lying on the train floor. He rested his head on his paws and closed his eyes.
"I don't think I could ever love again..."
Chapter 2 coming tomorrow no joke lol. Sorry I've been so inconsistent, but since I have more time on my hands now I can finally get down to writing these stories! LETS GO GUYS! WOOH!
