The Great War

Maglor ponders as World War I rages. A drabble.

I am sick of seeing it all. The pain, the strife, the agony of the widows in distant cities. Long ago, our peoples fought as one to defeat the Shadow, and died that the world might be released from the taint of Melkor, of his captain Sauron.

But now those wars are ended; that evil is vanquished. The Elves and Dwarves and Hobbits have faded. And so Men turn upon each other, fighting and killing their kindred for the land that they once defended together.

And even the sea, in all its vast forgetfulness, cannot assuage my grief for them.
