Chapter 1
At 6:15 on the cool, clear morning of September 10, 2012, Central Park is full of joggers.
Seventeen-year-old Alex Cabot doesn't care though; she just turns up the music blasting through her headphones and continues running. Her feet hit the pavement hard, but the feeling is freeing and exactly what she needs to start her first day of senior year.
By the time she rounds in on her fifth mile, she is flying.
Flying until she collides rather painfully with another jogger, causing them both to fall to the ground gracelessly.
Alex groans and sits up. Touching her left elbow, she winces and looks down at her fingertips. Of course she'd scrape her elbow. Of course. A deep, shy chuckle makes her look up.
Olivia Benson is standing above her, hand outstretched, a smirk firmly in place. Alex takes her best friend's hand and allows Olivia to pull her to her feet.
"Jesus, Alex," Olivia says, "walk much?"
"Ass," Alex retorts, blushing a deep shade of red. She punches Olivia's arm good-naturedly. "What are you even doing out here?"
Olivia quirks her eyebrow. "Jogging," she deadpans.
Alex rolls her eyes. "It's 6:42 in the morning."
Olivia shrugs. "I figured I'd catch you out here. I just didn't know I'd have to literally catch you," she says, erupting into a fit of laughter.
Alex groans, bumping her shoulder into Olivia's. "Shut up, Liv."
Olivia's laughter subsides, but the twinkling in her eyes remains. "How was your trip?"
Alex shrugs. "It was good." She chuckles. "My aunt was going on and on about you, though. She had a new recipe she wanted to teach you. But she's happy you got into the FBI's summer program. Speaking of which, how was it?"
"It was amaing," Olivia says, her face lighting up like a child's on Christmas morning. "The first few days were kind of a wash – figuring out rooming and schedules. We got uniforms thogu, which was cool. I mean, they're just t-shirts and jogging shorts, but they say 'FBI Academy' on them in bright yellow letters. We spent nine weeks doing classwork and PT all week. The weekends were spent in the library or practicing what we learned in their mock town. During the last three weeks, we were partnered up and given a case to solve."
"How'd you do?"
Olivia smiles proudly. "Solved it before anyone else."
Alex beams at her friend. "I knew you would, Liv. You're going to make an impressive detective someday."
Olivia's ears are burning and her cheeks ache from smiling so widely. "Aw, c'mon, Alex," she says. "You're embarrassing me."
Alex chuckles. "You want a ride to school?" she asks, stopping as they reach the street where she and Olivia split up.
Olivia nods. "That'd be great."
"Okay," Alex says. "See you at 8:00." She watches Olivia turn and walk down the street, the gentle sway of Olivia's hips causing her mouth to go dry.
