He's dead, possibly dying. Blood pooling on the floor. Ribbons of light flickering down from the broken roof. You can make out the dust dancing in slow circles. Maybe if there's no blood, then he's just sleeping. But you know better.
You catch movement off in the side of your vision. There's still some left, hiding somewhere. They want to finish this today. Today of all days. A day when nothing was going wrong but everything had been a barrel full of crap.
Pretty much a normal day indistinguishable from all others, until, the moment Donny announced that there was activity in their northern tunnels. Then Mike, being the fucking idiot he is, threw my sais at me and then ran off to get his 'chucks. If I didn't know that Mike has problems thinking out his actions, Mike would be a fucking asshole. Leo said something about being careful: blah, blah, blah, etcetera, etcetera. And we were off to ward off evil invaders from our great and wonderful home.
Damn, I just wanted to kick someone's head in. That sweet give as someone's bone breaks. That wonderful, heady rush, knowing that I can crush them.
He's dead, possibly dying. The maroon puddle is growing, centimeter by slow centimeter. But you can't get to him.
You slash as your opponent dances out of reach. Mike is to your right. So close you can hear that slight giving crunch of bone and you wonder if Mike likes that tremor as it runs up his 'chucks. Don is to your back: defense. Donny always likes defense. You take another swing and blood rushes down your hand. Blood all over.
Can't get away from the red. It's going to drown you.
We could hear them before we could smell them. Like giant bulls in a library stomping on broken China. A group of them were just standing there. Leo and Mike dodged around them and into a tunnel leading away from home. They splashed down hard enough to alert everyone in the sewers and dashed off. The humans gave chase with Don and I following them.
He's probably dead. But you won't say it out loud. You can't. So you slash again and again until the last of them falls. Until the blood sprays your face and you taste iron. You can't get your legs to work, but Don is already there kneeling next to Leo. Frantic movements and Mike is there too. Their hands move quickly, but you can't get your feet to move an inch.
Leo and Mike lead them out of the sewer and into an abandoned warehouse, where everything seemingly takes place. They could have left then and we wouldn't have stopped them but instead they stayed. By the time Don and I draw our weapons, Leo had two dead on the floor and Mike swings a killing blow.
Mike stops. His hands draw away and he pulls inside himself. You know, but it can't be true. Don's presses against the wound and shouts at Mikey. You finally lift your feet and before you know it, you're next to them.
You're right. He's dead.
