My child has never been one to become attached to humans, yet there he was; protecting one. Begging for her life as he did mine. But she is a fascinating one, a telepath I'm told, willing to risk her life to aid an unknown vampire. Ready to stand up to a woman, centuries her senior, twenty times stronger and faster, while unknowingly having two other vampires, her lover and his sheriff, ready to jump to her defense, should it get out of hand. Both hold affection for her, beyond what I have seen in years. Beyond what I thought my child capable of.
She seems to inspire loyalty even among my kind, a rare trait in a human. But I can see why, she will make a magnificent vampire one day. Hopefully it won't change her too much. Her eyes as they chained Eric to the alter promised only revenge and pure hatred, they were eyes of a lioness protecting her cub. They weren't the eyes of a human. Yet her love is not for him; that belongs to the young one, the one who does little to hide his dislike of my child. I understand him, my child wants his woman. It is surprising though that Eric hasn't banished him yet, perhaps he is afraid he would take the human with him?
Suddenly the girl is on the table, the female vampire standing over her. I interfere to prevent blood shed, for there is no doubt that this female vampire would meet her final death should her fangs reach the girl's neck.
The girl runs into her lover's waiting embrace, he is far too affectionate for a vampire. If he was older or had any real power, his obvious affection would put her in danger. But love makes us all to fools. Vampires are no exceptions.
As I command him to send the offender away I notice Eric, moving in behind the girl, ready to protect her if it should be needed. He might deny it, but to me it is obvious. Soon that girl will be one of us, most likely my own grandchild. Eric will not allow her to belong to another for eternity, even if that would cost him his area, he will take her. I can see it in his eyes, his unconscious gestures, which would go unnoticed by anyone but me. Officially she might belong to this William Compton, but there is no doubt that she will belong to my child soon. His eyes are always on her, watching her every move, protecting her and most of all, waiting.
