If you asked Harry later, he wouldn't be able to remember who threw the first spell. He couldn't tell you who he fought, who he saw. But he could tell you exactly what shade of violet the first spell shot in the battle was. He could tell you the multitude of colours flashing around him, some opening wounds, some causing phantom pain, and some causing people to just drop.
Harry duelled as time seemed to blur. Seconds were stretched to hours, while minutes flashed past in a blink. He was detached from his surroundings, just getting vague impressions of his surroundings.
He felt ashes fall across his face from an unknown spell, like a grey snow. He faintly remembered a cutting curse to his arm that he ignored. His focus was one man. Voldemort. He'd had an ache in his scar since the battle started, but it was like playing a deadly game of Hot or Cold – he had no idea where he was headed.
He remembered running to where one of the Weasleys – Bill, he was told – was grappling with a man and hexing him.
Bill gave him a vague nod before running off.
The next couple minutes were the only ones he remembered perfectly.
Harry felt himself get tackled to the ground. He looked up to find a Death Eater above him, hunched over with their arms outstretched. The figure shuddered in pain before tearing off the bone-white mask.
"Malfoy!" Harry yelled.
Draco fell to his knees, panting. As Harry got up, he could see the mass of flesh that used to be his back torn open and gushing blood at an alarming rate.
"Sent... to find... you," Draco panted.
"Why tell me?" Harry asked.
"You... only one... kill him," Draco gasped, his pale face growing ashen.
"Where is he?" Harry said, staring him in the eyes.
Draco looked at him, then a flood of images flooded his mind.
A path. Trees. Panic. Disorder. Black robes. Red eyes.
The images faded in time for Harry to see the life leave Draco's eyes, with a faint smile on his lips.
Harry swore. Then he was up and running. He had to finish this.
~*~*~
He could barely remember most of the battle. But that faint smile on Draco's ashen face he would never forget.
