It was one hell of fight, that's how they will remember it. The two most iconic heroes of their generation fighting it out over their absurd ideologies. Mario, who fought for Queen Peach's corrupt regime, had been ordered to take out Link due to his actions for being able to tame Hyrule in times of riot when Peach could not. Link had been looking forward to this day ever since he and Mario first met. As his good friend Pit once said: The world isn't big enough for the two of them.
Mario lay on the ground in immense pain. An arrow of a synthetic poison mushroom was launched at him by Pit. The mushroom exploded into his lunges, causing him to have trouble breathing but not enough to kill him. Link took this opportunity to throw several mechanically enhanced punches at Mario's face, making sure he would not fight back.
"It wasn't easy to make Mario," Link began, brushing some of the blood from his nose off. "It took years and cost a fortune, luckily I had both."
Link through a punch right at Mario's nose, practically shattering it in the process. Mario was beaten, but something about this felt off to Mario.
"Don't worry you'll survive," Link reassured. "The poison mushroom will work it's way out your lungs soon enough."
Mario looked right at the hole in Link's armour. He used his x-ray vision to see Link's heart beating in an irregular pattern.
"Link!" Mario slurred due to a swollen mark on his mouth. "Your Heart!?"
Link kicked him right in the face. Mario was getting the message Link was trying to beat into him.
Mario lay on his back, feeling the life being drained from him by the poison mushroom. Link hovered over him ready to deliver the punch line. He picked up Mario by the collar.
"But I didn't have to go easy on you," Link began, making brief mention to the fact that if he wanted to, Link could have Mario killed by the poison mushroom. "A different binding agent a stronger mix…"
"I want you to remember that…" Link said fiercely looking right into Mario's eyes.
"I wanted to remind you to stay out of my way," he continued. "In the years to come in your most private moments: I want you to remember the one man who beat you!"
Just then Link's heart finally gave out on him. He released Mario from his grasp and began to tumble backwards until he fainted. Mario rushed to prevent him from hitting the ground.
"Link!" Mario called out. He could hear his heartbeat fading, fading, until it was no more. Several troopers began to surround the two. Mario stood up. "Don't touch him!"
