Cat's In the Cradle

My daughter arrived just the other the day
Came into the world in the usual way
But there were trains to catch, and bills to pay
She learned to walk while I was away
Then she was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as she grew

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little Tia's blue with the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then.

Tiana turned ten just the other day
She said, "Thanks for the pot," and all the things she'd say,
"Can you teach me to cook?" I said, "Not today
I got a lot to do," she said, "That's ok"
And she walked away but her smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him."

She made some good gumbo just the other day
Workin' with so great a gift I had to say,
"I'm so proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
She shook her head, and she said with a smile
"What I've got to do now is to work on the beignets
Maybe tomorrow but not today."

I've gone since been buried, Tiana's moved away
Mama went to visit just the other day
She said "It's great to see you doing fine
But it's a shame to watch you work all the time."
Tiana said "All my daddy's hard work and words were true
So to get what I need I'll work hard too, yeah
Just like my daddy I'll work hard too."

And as I watched this scene it occurred to me
She's grown up just like me.
My girl was just like me.
