A/N: Trying something. Hope you all like.
I miss you all so much, and for your patience, I've created another story!
All mistakes are my own.
Full Synopsis: Caroline needed a job. She was all alone, her parents died, and left her with nothing, save for the small house her parents stayed in. She knew the only way to survive was to work. Responding to an ad placed in the local paper, she takes on the job as housekeeper. It's not a glamorous job, but it'll do.
Klaus Mikaelson has no need to be amongst humans. They are the ones who destroyed his family, and their existence. If it wasn't for Elijah, the only brother left who saved them both during the great expulsion of supernatural beings, they would never be. Now, they hide in plain sight.
What will happen when the two meet? Will Klaus see that not all human life is meaningless? And what does this mean for Caroline?
I give you, Tempt Me
Clutching the paper in her hand, Caroline stared up at the large estate. She'd never been on this side of town. Granted, Mystic Falls wasn't a big place, but she was always on the other side of the tracks. But, it didn't matter. People were people, and as her mom used to say, "Whether they're rich or not, they still have jobs that need filling. So, be presentable, and do your best."
Even thinking of her mom, and her mountain of sayings filled Caroline with a longing, and warmth at the same time.
Give it time.
It'd been only six months. Six months, since her mother was carelessly killed in a car crash. Driver who hit her was drunk, and of course survived. He was currently serving time upstate in prison, but Caroline tried not to pay it too much attention. The man wrote her profusely trying to apologize, but Caroline felt that you shouldn't have done something to cause such pain in the first place. Shaking her head out of her morbid thoughts, she took another deep breath, before taking another step forward. She had an interview today, and she had to do well.
…
"Klaus. Would you please move away from the window? You might scare the poor girl."
Rolling his eyes, he crossed his arms over his chest, before peering over at his brother.
"Why shouldn't I? After all, that's what her kind has done to us. Alienate, and drive us to distinction all because our blood is different from the rest."
Taking a sip of his 'red,' wine, Elijah only raised a brow before turning the page on his newspaper.
"I thought we were past this. She is not responsible for the murder of our family. We will soon find the men who led the charge. For now, we need to assume the mask of being normal. We were going to try to blend in with the community. Start over. I'm tired of traveling, and this community is more accepting of supernatural beings."
Snorting, Klaus walked over to pour his own glass.
"Yeah. Only because they have no idea who we really are."
Setting down his paper, Elijah sighed.
"Brother. Surely you understand our need to look normal? This estate is large. We need a housekeeper. Most will assume we are in a relationship, until we put to rest that we are siblings. And lastly, we have to become involved with the town. At least for the next ten years."
Klaus could hear the woman's footsteps walking closer, and hissed through his fanged teeth.
"And this girl is the answer?"
"She's the start. Now, won't you sit in on this interview? I'm already planning on giving the girl the interview."
"Nay. I think I'll skip out on the formalities."
Before Elijah could try to convince his brother further, he'd disappeared from the room. Standing to his full height, he quietly walked to the door, making sure to make more of a noise when she rang the doorbell. Opening it, he was surprised at the woman standing in front of him.
"Um, hello. My name is Caroline. Caroline Forbes. I'm here for the position as a housekeeper?"
Stepping to the side, he motioned her in.
"Do come in, Ms. Forbes. I apologize for my stare, but I wasn't expecting someone so young. My name is Elijah Mikaelson by the way. Should you get this job, I will be your main contact."
Shrugging, she smiled faintly.
"Thank you, Mr. Mikaelson. And, if it's any concern to you, I'm nineteen years old. I have my license to prove it."
Still very young to my 800 years of age.Elijah mused. Instead, he smiled and nodded.
"That will be fine. If you will follow me."
…
Walking into a large study/office, Caroline gaped at the mountain of books in front of her. she adored the fireplace, what looked to be foreign pieces scattered around the room, and the large, imposing desk. It was something out of a film.
"I take it you enjoy reading?"
Caroline had no idea that her hands were clasped to her chest the entire time, nor did she recognize the look of merriment on the older gentleman's face.
"Do I enjoy reading? Is the sun yellow? Is the sky blue? Is my car nonexistent?"
Chuckling at her sarcastic humor, he held his hand out, motioning for her to be seated.
"Ah. I stand corrected, then. Do you have your resume?"
Eyes wide, she opened her bag.
"Oh! I'm so sorry. I was so focused on not getting lost, and since the bus stops a half a mile away I put it away." She winced when she pulled it out, and it was crumbled. Folding it out best she could, she inwardly cursed when her hand started shaking from nerves.
And well, hunger.
Taking pity on her, he took the paper, and smiled before glancing over it. He noted that she had an odd string of jobs, most of them with customer service, and baby-sitting.
"It says here that you complete one year of college at New York University?"
Shyly she nodded.
"Yes."
"That's great! Why are you here then, answering a man's poor attempt at having someone clean his home?"
Taking a deep breath, Caroline decided to answer honestly. She could tell that this man in front of her wasn't shady, and was giving her a real paid opportunity.
"I actually left here after high school. Graduated a year early, but instead of leaving, decided to spend that time with my mom. When I turned eighteen, I left." Swallowing, she pressed on.
"I was planning to stay until I graduated, but my mother was killed in a car crash on the way home from work. She was a waitress."
Horrified, Elijah instantly reached out a hand and grasped it.
"I am truly sorry for your lost. I may not have known her, but I am sure she was an extraordinary woman."
Tearing up, she nodded.
"There will never be a woman like her." After several moments of silence, Elijah gently pulled his hand away, and grabbed a tissue, handing it to her. She thanked him before wiping her face. Clearing his throat, Elijah spoke gruffly.
"Am I to assume there is no father as well?" he asked a bit softly. Shaking her head, she said no.
"He left when I was ten. Never saw him again."
Elijah decided to look into any man with the last name Forbes. If she never saw him again, it could be that he was turned, and decided to not contact the girl. Time would tell.
"And you said that you do not have a car?"
Embarrassed she nodded.
"That's right. I do have a license, but the money I would use to typically fix my car had to be used for other things."
Like food, clothing, and the endless number of bills that came every month. Elijah understood what she was saying, by her silence. The girl was living paycheck to paycheck, with this job being her only hope. Beyond her forced calmness, he could see her desperation. More importantly, he could see her determination to never give up, to keep going. That alone was to be commended.
Elijah, and his brother Niklaus were the oldest vampires in the world. At one time, they were revered, because of their royal line. Elijah, was groomed to be the next king, and Klaus, the next military ruler of their world. However, once some of his own kind decided to try and overthrow the human race, it became a war that rivaled all previous battles. Elijah had always told his people one day that their downfall would be because of the same blood they lived by.
He was correct.
Once humans began catching on, they started infecting their bodies, causing any vampire or supernatural creature to its own demise. Sensing defeat, several retreated, forsaking the old ways, and hiding in plain sight. She reminded him of that. Understanding that she needed to pace herself, but knowing that the fight was far from over. Right now, it was survival. And because of that little spark of fire he saw in her eyes, he knew he couldn't turn her away.
"You remind me of my baby sister. She was just like you. Blonde haired, and so full of life." Recognizing the sadness in his eyes, she spoke softly.
"Was?"
Blinking quickly, he shuffled papers on his desk.
"That is correct. She died a long time ago. Her and my other three brothers, along with my parents."
Now it was Caroline's turn to look stunned.
"I am so sorry for your lost. I did not know them, but I am sure they were good people."
"They were. Thankfully, I still have my younger brother with me. You will see him on the property from time to time, so no need to be frightened. As a matter of fact, I will introduce you both, tomorrow."
Eyes wide, Caroline blinked.
"Tomorrow? Does that mean I got the job?"
Grinning, he confirmed it with a slight nod.
"Yes!" She shouted. Suddenly remembering her surroundings, she shook her fingers in the air a bit.
"Yay."
Chuckling, he stood.
"We will go over the details tomorrow, but the job comes with a car."
"Really?"
"Yes." Elijah said, steering her to the garage.
"I will give you the full tour tomorrow. For now, this car will be the one you use."
Opening the door, he led her out into the very deep, quiet, and supremely dark room. Caroline turned her eyes on him, ready to question the darkness, when all of a sudden, Caroline saw his eyes flash the most brilliant shade of emerald green she'd ever seen.
She didn't know whether to be terrified or fascinated.
She decided to go with the latter.
Just as quickly his eyes were the same brown she'd come to expect. Shaking her head, she saw the lights were turned on.
"Something bothering you, Ms. Forbes?" Blushing at his arched brow, she shook her head.
"No."
Turning to look about the room, she gaped at the car in front of her.
"You want me to take that?" she pointed. Pursing his lips, he walked around the car.
"Yes. I hope it is alright. It is a 2018 Volvo. Typically, I-we get company cars in black. This one is no exception. Will this be acceptable?" Elijah asked.
Glancing over at the man, she was about to question the validity of giving a housekeeper a car, but decided to be quiet about it.
Don't knock a gift horse in the mouth, and all that.
"It is more than acceptable. Thank you. I will be here bright and early tomorrow. I can start by asking what you would like for breakfast."
Smiling a bit, he pulled out the car keys, handing them over to her.
"My brother and I aren't much breakfast people. As a matter of fact, we get our own food, so no need to worry about us."
Caroline thought it strange, but decided not to comment on it.
"Okay."
"Oh! Here are the set of keys for the house. Once you arrive, just enter, and start work. The security code is 1243. Also," Elijah reached in his back pocket, and pulled out a black card. A black Amex cards.
Caroline's eyes were wide, as she'd never seen one in person. He held it in front of her, which caused her to pay attention.
"I'm sorry, but what will I need that for?"
"To pay all the household bills, buy cleaning supplies, and food. Consider this the company expense account. Get things you will need as well."
"Um. Isn't that what a paycheck is for?"
Studying her, Elijah knew that she needed money. But he also knew she wouldn't take a hand-out. Every inch of her screamed a proud woman. He would not offend, nor embarrass her. instead, he thought the expense account would be a way for her to get immediate needs, while surviving. He didn't attempt to know the eating habits of humans, but he did know this one was more on the smaller side.
"You are right. However, an expense account is not only for your benefit, but mine as an employer. Besides, this is what you will need for the house, and to do your job. Surely, you do not expect me to take what we need out of your check?"
At that, Caroline blushed before breaking eye contact.
"You are right."
"Good."
Once again, Elijah held out the card, to which she grabbed and placed in her purse, along with the set of keys.
"Your hours are 10 am-4pm. Tomorrow I will have you sign a general contract, which is valid for the next six months."
Nodding, Caroline took in all the information, even as he was walking her to the car. Holding the door open, he waited until she was settled in before leaning over.
"I look forward to seeing you around, Caroline. And thank you for taking the job."
At that, she laughed incredulously.
"Thank you for hiring me. I promise, you will not be disappointed."
Okay Folks! Tell me what you think! This is going to be a fun, exciting, sexy, human/vampire read. Gah!xs
