This is based of the song Voices by Chris Young. I don't own the song or the characters. I hope you enjoy , let me know what you think. If you want to I recommend listening to the song before or during the story.
Derek had always been an obedient little boy , and he still remembers things his parents had taught him when he was small.
He always remembered his Dad coming home from work , worn out because he had given it his all. Derek's father would come home at night exhausted but still helped Derek and his sisters with homework , played catch with Derek in the yard , and to his displeasure had tea party's with Derek's little sisters. He made dinner to give Derek's momma a break.
" When you get a job , make sure to make time for others, Derek." Derek's dad said over a game of catch one night.
" I will dad, I promise."
Even after the long days of work , and cases that took away his weekends Derek stayed true to his word. He made time to hang out with the team , and visited his momma and sisters whenever he got the chance.
His momma had always gone to church every sunday , but after his fathers death Derek didn't join her anymore , but one Sunday he finally changed his mind. His momma had been saving up to buy a new stove she wanted , but she money in the basket when it came around.
" Why did you give money , Mama? We barely have any already and that was supposed to go towards the stove you wanted." Derek asked.
" Because , baby boy. Some people don't have bread , let alone a stove. Whenever you have a little bit of extra money , remember the poor and think about how lucky you are."
Derek couldn't go to church every Sunday , but when he could , he did. There was always a twenty in the basket , even if he was saving up for a new T.V.
One time when Derek was twelve Derek's uncle had come home wasted. Derek's grandpa just shook his head and said
" You can drink but don't ever take it to far. You can hurt the people you care about , and yourself. Know your limit."
When Derek was old enough to drink his grandpa's words always came to mind. Derek was always careful to watch how much he was intaking , because he didn't want to go too far.
Derek had been told on many occasions by his grandmother to find the one and treat her right. Now Emily was by his side and he never planned on letting her go. Derek had never been so thankful for voices in his entire life. He just wished he could thank them all now.
