A/N: Set during Eclipse. CONTAINS SPOILERS! Emmett's POV.
"Rosalie! No!" I heard Alice's anguished cries before I saw what was happening. I turned around, everything moving in slow motion, to see a newborn wrap his hands around my beloved Rosalie's head and rip it from its place. The others pounced then, ripping appendages from her body, throwing them into the flames. Seeing her burn, seeing her delicate frame engulfed, was what sent me over the edge.
I screamed and plowed my way through the hoard of newborn vampires, snapping their bones as I pushed them aside, until I got to the fire that held the ashes of my beloved. I fell to my knees as a low snarl escaped from my lips. Alice saw my plan half a second before I dashed toward the forest.
"Emmett! No! It's not her fault!" she screamed as she followed me. But I was too far gone to comprehend her words. There was only one thing flowing though my mind:
Bella Swan must die.
It was her fault Rosalie had died; she was the reason we were fighting in the first place. Rose hadn't believed in this fight. Why should we help her? She was Edward's responsibility. If he hadn't fallen in love with a human, we wouldn't be here. Rose would be alive!
I pushed my legs harder into the ground, gaining speed and losing Alice. I was sure Edward knew what was coming and that he and the werewolf Seth would defend her with all they had... if they weren't caught up in fighting Victoria. They would be so concerned about her that I would seem utterly harmless.
I slowed down as I entered the campsite and scanned the area for her, the human who stole my angel from me. There she was. I saw Edward, frantically trying to destroy Victoria. The werewolf was fighting a newborn. It was the perfect time to launch my attack. They were distracted.
Bella saw me then, her huge brown eyes filling with relief, not knowing what was coming for her, what her fate would be. I walked slowly toward her, forcing myself to savor the moment I would kill the reason for my dispair.
Edward's eyes filled with panic as he saw me moving toward her. He ripped and clawed at Victoria, trying his best to get rid of her, but she was unwavering. In his panic, he was clumsy, imprecise. He was losing focus. Seth couldn't shake the newborn. I knew now was my only chance.
"Emmett, is everything okay? Is anyone hurt?" Bella yelled over the snarls of the close by fight. I snarled. Her eyes grew large; she seemed to realize I was a threat now. I crouched low to the ground, letting my instincts take over. I was a predator; she was my prey.
I lunged forward as she tried to run. My hands caught around her ankles, dragging her to the ground. I crouched above her.
She stared up at me, frightened to speak, to struggle. I snarled out the words, echoed from so long ago, "Hell's not so bad if you get to keep an angel with you." Her breathing was ragged. I lost what little grip I had on myself and began to scream, "She never believed in this fight! Now she's gone because of you! Give me one reason why I shouldn't kill you!" I locked my steel grip around her throat, making sure not to crush her completely. "Why should you get to live when she died fighting for you?"
She choked and gasped, tears escaping from her eyes. In that moment I knew I couldn't do it. I couldn't kill Bella Swan. I loosened my grip and let my shoulders slump. In that moment I had seen all the good, all the beauty Edward saw in her. I saw how someone could love her so easily, how she could make a coven of vampires love her, protect her. Rosalie had died fighting for her. To kill her now... Rosalie's death would be in vain.
I stood and helped her to her feet. I would protect her with my whole self. I would avenge my Rosalie, my angel.
