Title: Red Diamonds
Rating: PG
Summary: The Duke ponders his love for Satine.
Disclaimer: As always, I did not create these characters, but I'm extremely grateful to Baz Luhrmann for doing so. Please review; feedback is greatly appreciated!

I am not a difficult man! I am simply used to getting what I want, and right now Satine is what I want. It puzzles me, really, why she does not feel the same way about me. I'm not a conceited man, but I know that I have all of the qualities that a girl looks for in a lover - I'm handsome, witty, charming, and I have lots of money. I'm a Duke, for God's sake!
I'm stumped. I truly believe I've run out of ways to win her over, so I must conclude that the fault lies not in me but in her. She is beautiful beyond beautiful - exquisite, really. With her fiery red hair and ivory skin, she is absolutely breathtaking. Perhaps she's a little lacking in the head; the most attractive girls often are. Too-tight corsets can have that effect, I've heard. That must be it: she's lovely but a little slow, a little dimwitted. That's it, then, that's why she hasn't taken to me.
But how can I show her how much I love her? I know! I've encountered many a girl that got offended because I seemed to care more about her body than her mind. Silly little things. I suppose I'll have to show Satine that I love her for her mind, however slow it may be. Let's see. I could bring her a book of verses by her favorite poet - but I don't know who that is. I could take her to an art exhibit at her favorite museum - but I don't know what that is, either. I know! Wait, no, I don't know what kind of music she enjoys. Well, there goes that idea.
Warner! Damn, where is that man? I want a glass of brandy. Warner! Warner! Ah, there he is. Yes, brandy, right away. Anyway, where was I? Letting her know that I'm in love with her mind - eh, well, it seems that I'm not. But my love for her is so fierce, so strong! It's like nothing I've ever felt before, except for that time with the girl from Finland. But she never understood anything I said, anyway, so that was a waste of time. No, I've never felt anything near what I'm feeling for Satine. My love for her is flaming and beautiful - like red diamonds. Yes, like red diamonds. I'll have to mention that to her. Oh! I know! Jewels, she loves jewels. A few expensive baubles from me, and she'll be eating out of my hand. I am a clever man, aren't I? Now, where is my brandy?

This is the first in the Diamonds Trilogy - watch for Green Diamonds and Blue Diamonds!
