Substitute

(These characters are not mine--I wish two of them were)

Sabrina blew smoke over the rim of her coffee cup ans scowled. She was in a black mood, which no ammount of caffeine could placate.

"Look, I know you're pissed off about having to do the stake out with me instead of Kelly, but will you please just say something?" Kris entreated.

Sabrina stared straight ahead through the car windshield as if Kris weren't there. The blond put a hand on her arm. "Couldn't you pretend I'm Kelly?

Sabrina turned to her. "You don't know what you're asking."

Kris leaned close and looked into Sabrina's eyes. "Yes. I do."

Two hours later.

The fog had moved in from the ocean and surrounded the orange Pinto to near invisibility. Kelly made her way through the soupy murk holding a flashlight in one hand and balancing two food containers in the other. As she knocked on the window of the driver's side she could detect frantic movement inside. After a small delay, the window rolled down.

"Hi. Didn't mean to startle you. I brought food," she said, holding up the plastic containers.

"I thought you were working with Bosley," Sabrina said, avoiding Kelly's eyes.

"I was. We finished early and I remembered you two sitting out here bored, cold, and hungry, and thought I'd be an "angel" and bring sustenance."

"Thanks, that's really sweet," Kris said, reaching past Sabrina and taking the food. "I'm starved."

Kelly frowned. "Bree, aren't you hungry? I got Chinese, your favorite."

"Thanks, Kel but....not now. I'll have some later."

Kelly noticed Sabrina was gripping the steering wheel so hard her knuckles were white. "You planning to drive this thing into the sea?"

Sabrina released her grip, still not meeting Kelly's eyes. "Bree, is something wrong? You need a break? I could sit with Kris for a while."

Sabrina nodded, unfolded her lanky legs from the driver's position, and got out of the car. The internal light came on. "Hey, Kris, who were you out with last night?" Kelly grinned.

"What?"

"That hickey's pretty severe. Funny I didn't notice it earlier."

Kris shot her hand up to her neck and covered the discoloration. "I'll be back later," Sabrina said, practically running into the fog...
