A Captain's Torment
"Luffy!" Robin cried out as the fearsome Kuma descended upon her. With a shout of rage, Luffy launched himself towards both of them. He was desperate to save Robin, desperate to stop Kuma, desperate to do anything. But a moment before he got there, he watched in horror as the mighty paw came down on Robin. In a blink of an eye she was gone; she had vanished just like the others.
Overcome with feelings, Luffy fell to the ground. His body began to thrash about as he let out a scream of pure emotion. A sound filled with anger, rage, frustration, and despair echoed within the grove. "Why?" he shouted as his eyes filled with tears. Tears that had not fallen since his childhood.
His fist pummeled the ground; the sadness over what had befallen his crew washed over him. The mighty Kuma stood nearby but Luffy paid him no attention. He was finding it hard to focus on anything due to the grief that clouded his mind. Grief caused by the knowledge that all this was his fault.
"I couldn't save even a single nakama!" he wailed, tears continuing to stream down his face. It showed weakness but he no longer cared. At this moment, he no longer cared about anything.
He wasn't aware as Marine Admiral Kizaru approached the pair. He didn't even recognize that the man was speaking. His thoughts were still on his beloved crew, turning to each one in turn. Zoro, who stood by his side no matter the odds. Nami with her tough exterior and complete trust in him. Usopp, who's stories and laughter brightened everyone in the crew. Sanji his faithful chef despite all their arguments. The childish but lovable Chopper who looked up to him. Robin, who was willing to give her own life in exchange for theirs. Franky, always boisterous, but keep their precious ship safe. And Brooke, the better than musician he had always longed for. He had failed each of them.
Luffy always acted carefree, sometimes to the point of recklessness. But that didn't mean Luffy was an idiot. He knew he was lucky, he had the crew he always hoped for. Thats why his nakama, every one of them, were his treasure. He vowed to himself at the beginning of his journey to protect all of them. He put his own life on the line, even damaging his own body to keep them safe. But this time he had failed. No matter how hard he had tried, one by one he let each of them down. Now he was alone and without them he was lost.
After an eternity, Luffy registered the heavy footsteps of Kuma as he came to stand behind him. "This will be the last time we meet." He spoke calmly, raising his hand slowly. Luffy looked up at the man looming above him. The sight brought him back to reality, rage once again etched on his face. "This is goodbye." Kuma stated, swinging his paw downwards. As the dreaded hand approached, Luffy made a vow to himself. They would meet again, he swore, no matter what happened to him they would meet and Kuma would pay for what he did to his nakama.
