Go to sleep, baby, Mama will sing
of blue butterflies and dragonfly wings.
Moonlight and sunbeams, raiments so fine.
silver and gold for baby of mine.
Go to sleep, baby, Brother will croon
of star charts, ships and mighty typhoons.
Astrolabes and backstaffs will navigate
so seek the weary to emancipate.
Go to sleep, baby, Father will speak
of rajahs and ranis and mighty sheikhs.
Crowns and scepters and jeweled thrones,
an empire you shall have for your own.
Go to sleep, baby, Sister will tell
of wolves and lambs and angels who fell.
Lore and prophecy destined to die
with her aid you will master the sky.
My adaptation of Pierce's Lullaby from Kim Harrison's The Hollows series. The original version is incomplete and consists of:
"Go to sleep, baby,Mama will sing. Of blue butterflies, and dragonfly wings. Moonlight and sunbeams, raiments so fine. Silver and gold, for baby of mine. Go to sleep, baby. Sister will tell, of wolves and of lambs, and demons who fell."
I really, really, liked this lullaby. I had made my own version a few years but I had lost it, much to my dismay. And even though I can't sing to save my life - kids used to love it when I sang this to them. I started thinking about this lullaby again, so I gave writing it another go on this sleepy snowy morning. :)
It's highly imperfect - syllable counts are off, the use of emancipate is a little weird, and I keep switching the 'brother' and 'sister' stanzas, but somehow, I still like it. Were I to ever have children, this would be my go-to lullaby.
