"Breaking News. This just in. Shooter enters Gotham Academy, 26 confirmed dead, another 17 wounded…" Jade's heart froze. She knew that Artemis went to Gotham Academy, (not that she cared,) and she knew that Artemis was too much of a hero to let anyone injured before her, (not that she cared.) but for that instant, her heart skipped a beat. (She didn't know why. She didn't care.) Jade's mind raced. (Why? She didn't care.) If Artemis was one of the dead… (It was one less enemy, her brain told her, but her heart argued.) Jade leaned in closer to learn more.
"Mostly 9th graders and adults… We have 6 confirmed dead 10th graders…" (Why was her heart racing? She didn't care! …Didn't she?) She absent-mindedly wandered towards the fire-station, where she knew the students would be evacuated.
"Perhaps I will just check…" Jade mused to herself.
At the door, Jade glimpsed a mane of blond hair sitting on a gurney. She lingered a while, only for her breath to hitch when she noticed the mane wasn't moving.
"Artemis!" Jade cried out. She didn't mean to, it just… popped out.
"Do you know her?" a peeved medic asked her. Jade nodded numbly.
"She's my sister." She stumbled towards the gurney, as if in a daze.
Artemis was not moving. She looked as cold and as dead as a statue.
"She protected another student from the shooter. She must be very brave," the doctor told her. "But she's comatose. We don't know if she'll ever recover." Jade's heart skipped another beat. She felt something shatter inside her body. She didn't know what it was... Perhaps her sanity? Or maybe it was the block on her big sister instinct. Revenge was the only thing on her mind as she stalked away. (Whoa, whoa, wait. Why was she doing this?)
Three days later, Artemis woke up. She could only wonder who left the single red rose on her bed table. The doctors were just as baffled.
Four days later, Artemis was once again surprised by the news. The shooter showed up in a cell that night at the police station, mumbling about cats and demonic grins. Artemis's mind never made the connection.
Jade didn't know why she caught the gunman. It just… felt right. Okay, Jade admitted, maybe she did care. But nobody would ever know that.
Dedicated to those 26 people that lost their lives in the Connecticut shooting. Bless their souls, and may the shooter be forever punished.
