It rained that day, which Laxus didn't find all that surprising since the Fiore weather had a knack for adapting to the mood. He was miserable, therefore it rained.
He watched as the woman before him cleaned out her side of the the closet, stuffing articles of clothing into a large duffell. There was no time for neatness; she was itching to leave, he could tell. Her movements were frantic and his sensitive hearing could pick up the way her breath caught on her sobs. She didn't know she was wearing his shirt, even as she vied to get away from him.
He didn't know he had a heart, and that it could break like this. The fact that she was leaving was finally sinking in and it made damnable guilt roll in his gut. What an asshole he was, that he managed to push away the woman with the biggest heart he knew. It was all definitely his fault. Mirajane Strauss never did anything wrong, not really.
When she'd grabbed all she thought she needed, she made for the door.
"Mira," Laxus called out simply. She faced him with all her anguish and weariness. He got up, moving for the first time since her tirade. One of his hands gripped hers.
"You don't have to go." He told her, bravely holding her gaze.
She sniffled, brushing away snowy hair from her face. "Then give me a reason to stay, Laxus."
"I love you." All his desperation was pouring out of him now.
She shook her head, more tears streaking down her cheeks. "That's not enough anymore."
There was nothing else for him to say. He didn't know what more she wanted. The love that was so hard for him to give in the first place was not enough for her, and it killed him.
Laxus dropped her hand and watched her go.
