I do not own Clannad ~ After Story. Also, extreme spoilers and character death, along with being incredibly depressing.
The first thing she'd noticed was that she was no longer cold. In fact, she felt far better then she ever had in her life! Her body was pleasantly warm and she was surrounded with light, no longer in pain or covered with sweat. She moved freely, the terrifying weight that had prevented movement not moments ago was completely gone. Nagisa smiled to herself, enjoying the feeling. She had made it through the birth. She had a life to look forward to. One with the man that she loved and her newborn baby girl. She opened her eyes and waited for them to adjust to the light. Ushio, she would love her little girl until the end of her days. She would have willingly died for her.
But what she saw made her body run cold once more.
Tomoya sat below her, face shrouded in terrible disbelief and anguish, tears flowing freely down his cheek and his breath coming in short gasps. Ushio wailed from his arms, in distress for the pressure he was unknowingly placing on her fragile body. And she lay beside him, unmoving...
How could she see herself?
Nagisa felt herself begin to tremble as she looked down at herself and jolted violently. She couldn't see herself... She couldn't see herself! She turned her gaze back to Tomoya and felt the tears begin, or she would have, had she had a body to cry with. Instead, the overwhelming sorrow filled her, the light that just moments ago had filled her with serenity now morphing into feelings of dread.
He cradled her body, no longer paying attention to their baby which had been placed unceremoniously beside him and taken by the doctor. He held her head gently, pulling her up towards him. Nagisa noticed Sanae, barely able to see through her own tears, remove Ushio from the doctors arms, but he hardly noticed, his gaze focused on her body.
"Nagisa!" His body trembled, his breathing becoming more laboured. "Nagisa! This isn't funny Nagisa... Please Nagisa... Open your eyes..."
"Tomoya-kun!" She moved to his side, attempting to touch him but unable to. After all, she had no body... "Tomoya-kun! I'm right here!"
"Nagisa... Nagisa... Why... Didn't you promise to stay with me?"
"I am still here! Tomoya-kun!"
Her cries fell deaf to his ears. "Nagisa, why won't you answer me? I'm sorry, whatever I did, I'm so sorry..." His breath chocked off as he heaved heavily with a particularly violent sob. "Didn't you want to live with Ushio and I? Didn't you want to teach her about life and be able to ask Sanae-san for advice when we didn't know what to do? We were going to tell the Old Man to stop spoiling her all the time with toys... And I was going to be an idiot as usual and you would scold me for it like usual... We were going to grow old together, buy a house somewhere in the country where the air is clean and the sky is bright, remember Nagisa? When Ushio grew older as well, we would support her as she made her way through life, and we would live together, in love like we are right now. You promised me that we could make it through anything... Nagisa, please, just open your eyes!"
"Tomoya..." Nagisa moved to his side, trying with all her might to touch him. Why was she always so weak? Why could she never be strong, even at times when it mattered most? "Tomoya..."
He hugged her body close to him... And there was nothing she could do but cry, silent and unseen, at his side.
Well, that was most certainly depressing, was it not? However, I could not help doing this little drabble because let's face it, you cannot watch that scene and not be depressed.
