Pabu
The sun is setting over Republic City, turning the sky a brilliant shade of orange with shades of pink mixed in in a way that you'd never expect that would work. Two kids are walking along the side of the road seemingly in a hurry when the younger of the two notices the sky and looks up, his face breaking into a wide smile when he sees the sunset.
"Hey Mako!" the boy yells to his older brother "Look at the sky! Isn't it amazing?"
The older boy turns at the sound of his brother's voice, but a look of annoyance crosses his face when he sees that his brother has stopped walking.
"Come on, Bolin" he says taking his brothers arm to continue their walk "We need to be off the streets before it gets dark, you know how dangerous these streets get once the night rolls in. The park's just around the corner; we could spend the night there"
"But. . ." Bolin starts to protest but his older brother just keeps on walking and is dragging Bolin along with him. Bolin sighs and keeps on walking at the same pace as his brother.
The brothers reach the park just as soon as the sun disappears over the horizon. They head toward the fountain located in the middle of the park and Mako, after looking around to make sure that nobody was watching them, splashed a bit of water on to his face. Bolin is about to follow suit when he hears something lapping at the water from the other side of the fountain.
He goes around and sees a small orange animal drinking from the fountain.
"Hey Mako!" he whispered loudly to his brother "look!" Mako immediately came and stood next to Bolin.
"What is it? What's wrong?" Mako asked looking around for possible danger then he noticed what his little brother was pointing to. "Bolin, it's just a fire ferret. And it's a baby one at that"
Bolin went toward the fire ferret who was now gazing at the two brothers curiously. "Come here little guy" Bolin said kneeling down to pet the fire ferret "Don't be afraid." The younger boy extended his arm out toward the ferret moved closer toward him and sniffed Bolin's hand. After a few seconds the ferret moved even closer and Bolin was able to pet and comb the ferret's fur.
"Hey!" Bolin exclaimed "I think he likes me!"
Bolin picked up the ferret up and began walking back toward his brother.
"Mako! Isn't he cute?" Bolin asked his brother holding up the fire ferret "Can I keep him?"
"No." Mako said, crossing his arms with a scowl visible on his face.
"Why not?" Bolin asked his brother, not wanting to let go of the fire ferret.
"Because we can barely afford to keep ourselves alive let alone a pet" Mako told his little brother "You are not keeping him and that's final"
"But Mako" Bolin said, putting on the saddest face he could to gain his brothers empathy "he's all alone and he's just a baby. If we don't take care of him, bad things might happen to him. We're all that he has. Pleeeeeaaaase?" He holds out the fire ferret even more towards Mako.
The older boy stares at the fire ferret and is about to say no once again when he sees the look on Bolin's face. With a sigh he agrees.
"He is kind of cute" Mako says "but he's your main responsibility okay?"
"Alright!" Bolin exclaims "Thanks Mako!" He gives his brother a hug with their new friend right in between the two brothers.
Later that night, the two boys camp out under the trees. Mako is fast asleep while Bolin is preoccupied with his new pet.
"I think I'll call you Pabu" He whispers so that he wouldn't wake Mako. Bolin then lays down on the grass and stretches out "Good night Pabu. Welcome to the family."
