Prologue

Columbus, Ohio, 1907

Pain. Unimaginable Pain. All I could feel was burning. It was like my entire body had been dipped in liquid fire.

"MAKE IT STOP!" I screamed.

"If I hadn't done this, you would've died." Carlisle whispered in my ear somberly.

"I DON'T CARE I WOULD RATHER DIE THAN FEEL THIS!" I screamed again.

"This will all be over soon, I promise." Carlisle stated.

"WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME!?!" I accused Carlisle.

"I did it…" Carlisle began.

But then something strange happened. The pain started to let up. I could feel my heart speed up and my blood turned to ice in my veins. The burning was replaced with numbness. My heart beat faster and faster. I could feel it was about to burst out of my body.

"…because I couldn't bear to lose you" Carlisle finished

I barely heard him though; all I could hear was the thumping of my heart.

This couldn't continue, I knew I was going to die. My heart continued to beat faster.

And then, it stopped.

"William?" Carlisle called my name.

And in response I finally opened my eyes for the what felt like the first time…
