Words Left Unsaid
She was leaning against the stone wall waiting for him. He had finally promised to take her to Hogsmeade, and the day had finally come.
He was already there, waiting, when she walked into the room. She sat down a little away from him, the silence in the room, save for the ticking of the clock, barely tolerable. Though neither showed signs of stress, the tension between them was unmistakable. She was the first to break the ice.
"What are you doing here?"
"Same thing as you, I suppose. Waiting to see the old man," he responded, his voice devoid of emotion. They could have been strangers.
Silence settled around them before either spoke again.
"You what?" she stormed around the room yelling at him. "How could you? You made a commitment to me! Does that mean nothing to you?"
"I wasn't expecting to see you-"
"No, you wouldn't, would you," he cut her off. "But I had some free time before my next meeting." The seconds passed slowly. "So, what have you been doing with yourself these days? Still with Ms. Danser?"
"No," she answered, fidgeting with her ring in her lap. "I decided to join Fred and George's joke shop. I thought it would be more fun creating various exploding products. One right decision I've made for myself," she muttered the last part, mostly to herself.
It turns out she never should have trusted that woman. Taking in a boarder to help pay the rent, who then ran off with her savings, leaving her broke, was a huge mistake.
He smirked. "You always were a mess, never had a plan. Did you finally get tired of being poor?"
Her expression hardened. "Just because I chose to experience life rather than live a mapped out existence does not make me a mess," she retorted. "I bet you're still working for your father."
He never did anything impulsively. Everything in his world had to be neat and orderly, planned to the minute details, and she hated him for it. There was never any spontaneity, no more spark in their relationship, and she wondered what they were still doing together.
His jaw clenched almost imperceptibly at this. "You look well at any rate."
She sniffed and settled back into her chair. The only sound was the ticking of the clock as their minds inserted the words left unsaid.
On the day she left him, it felt like his world was falling apart. They knew just how to push each other's buttons, but truth was, he was still absolutely crazy about her and she for him.
