Sunset
"Be home before sunset, Ana."
The last words my mother ever spoke to me. You never know what you've got 'till it's gone. How true. I really did mean to be home before sunset. I did. In our neighborhood, it's not safe to be out later. I took a short cut. My mistake, I suppose. I should've known better.
Our area, Hell's Kitchen, New York, it's a maze of streets and back alleys, twisting around run down apartment buildings. It's a perfect hiding spot for criminals and 'creatures of the dark'. Yeah, I'd heard all the urban legends. Never really believed them. Until it was too late.
There are people who carry stakes everywhere they go. Seriously, in their back pockets. I used to just figure that with the number of unexplained murders in these parts, people place their fears on the supernatural, things that don't really exist. I knew that it was dangerous around our streets, and it wasn't really safe for an eighteen year old girl to be walking about on her own. But I thought I was invincible.
I guess I really am now...
Well, not completely invincible. But as close as they could make me.
Now, getting back to my story. I was walking home from.. actually, I can't remember what from. It seems like such a long time ago now. Anyway, walking home, watching the sun duck down behind the buildings, and cursing myself for loosing track of time. So, I took a short cut. Down a back alley I often used in broad daylight, but in the red light of sunset, it was ominous and creepy.
I stupidly assured myself that since it wasn't dark, nothing was dark, nothing would harm me.
But there in the red light of the setting sun, I died at the hands of a vampire, who sucked me dry.
But unusually, they did not leave me there, in the dirty, stinking alleyway, but took me, and changed me. Into what I am now. The vampire Iliana.
