Death Note; Yin and Yang; Prologue Death Note; Yin and Yang; Prologue. We could be twins, we look the same… We wear white gloves to prevent from fingerprints. Heaven can be easily turned to hell. It takes a little good will. (Ephemeras Party)
Light Yagami, top student in Japan, perfect son and brother, was bored. That was all there was to it. He was undeniably, irremediably, constantly, bored. After all, one did not continue to get the thrill of placing first on the college practice exams after doing so for the umpteenth time. No, life was becoming a dull object to get through.
That was, until he watched a black notebook drift down towards the ground.
When the bell rang, Light started for home. His mind drifted back towards the notebook, looking to see that it was still on the ground. Shrugging, he picked it up.
The human whose name is written in this notebook shall die.
"What a sick joke," he muttered. "Like those stupid chain letters saying your dog will get cancer if you don't pass them along." He placed the notebook back on the ground… and then turned around and picked it up again.
"Hey, little brother!" Taro Yagami, Light Yagami's twin brother, was running up to meet him. "What do you have there?"
"We're twins, Taro," said Light, rolling his eyes. "I am not your little brother."
"I am older by five minutes," countered Taro. "Come on, I want to see!"
Yoink!
Taro started to flip through the notebook. "Death Note? Well, that is… stupid." He tossed the notebook back to Light. "Are you getting into the occult, little brother? I am so proud of you."
"I found it," said Light, "it is not mine."
"Oh," said Taro, "I thought I might have another shamen on the way here."
"I am not a witch, unlike you, Taro," said Light, meaning to give the double connotation.
"I am not a witch!" said Taro, stomping his foot. "I prefer the term shamen!"
"But Taro," reasoned Light, "you are gay. Surely the term witch doesn't offend you that badly."
"Yes, it does," said Taro, placing a hand on his hip. "You see, brother dearest, when people think of witches, they do not think of pretty Japanese boys-" Light snorted, "-they think of the woman with the green skin."
"Well, then, you have some pretty lightly hued green skin."
"Brother!"
Light laughed at his twin's reaction. After all, there was not much difference you could tell from just looking at the Yagami twins except one was a bit thinner and feminine looking… and carried a school bad with gay pride buttons and patches on it.
"Come on, let's go home."
And Light Yagami slipped the Death Note into his bag.
