Darkened After-Glow

The clock ticked away, counting down to nine-thirty, quietly handing out the seconds as the six people sat in oblivion to the disappearing time. Not knowing how close chaos was to turning over their delicate lives and kick-starting it

Tick. Tick. Tick. Five minutes to go.

Soichiro Yagami got up to get some coffee. Matsuda slumped over onto Mogi, dozing away. Mogi ignored this and continued to chat quietly with Aizawa while Light typed information into the computer. L absent-mindedly nibbled on a chocolate bar. Nope, none of them had a clue as to the being exiting the elevator down the hall.

One minute. Tick. Tick. Tick.

The clock ticked away, counting down to nine-thirty, quietly handing out the seconds a sthe six people sat in oblivion to the disappearing time.

Five seconds....four seconds. How would they react?

Two seconds.....One second.....

BANG!!!

Everyone jumped as something ran into the door, rattling it on it's hinges. Matsuda awoke with a yelp. Tension was thick in the air as slience radiated from beyond the door. L stood, popping the last bit of chocolate into his mouth to walk towards the door. Light grabbe his wrist, stopping him.

"It's too dangerous, Ryuzaki," he whispered.

Suddenly a slurred voice carried through the door, interrrupted by the occasional giggle and hiccup.

"Why am I such a mis...hic...fit. No, I'm...hic...not just a nitwit. You can't...hic...fire me! I QUIT..HIC! Seems I don't fit...hic...in!"

The song ended and everyone seemed unnerved by the singing; even Light showed hints of worry. But L laughed, unconcerned about their visitors obvious drunken antics.

"Yeah, ninty-five percent chance that we got a real ax-murderer paying us an evening welcome," he joked.

He brushed away Light's hand to saunter to the door. Listening to the rustling of cloth on the other side he figured out who it was. There was a burst of giggles, giving L the clues as to what had been consumed. He opened the door to stare down at a lanky figure sittling curled up on the floor. The visitor stared up at him with a twin face. The mirror-image's face was flushed a pale pink, those unfocused beetle-black eyes glittered like stars. He smiled widely at L, hiccuping loudly as he swayed.

"Hello L, its...hic...been a while...hic!" The man giggled happily.

"Who is it, Ryuzaki?" Aizawa asked curiously.

"A drunken fool," he sighed.

From his pocket he pulled out a piece of chocolate to unwrap it and pop it in the drunkards mouth.

"Now chew," he ordered.

Obidiently the visitor did so and his eyes came into focus.

"Chocolate really is a cure all, isn't it, L?"

L chuckled and helped the man stand. "Never drank champange again. You hear?" The man nodded in agreement and he lead him into the room, silently enjoying the gasps of surprise.

"Everyone, this is D, my twin brother..."

"...but you can call me Niyuki," D finished.

"Hello," Matsuda welcomed cheerfully.

D smiled widely unlike L who stood there solemnly as usual.
