Two Words

It's just not fair. That was the only thought racing through her mind as she sat and stared out the window.

She could hear him. Rifling through her wardrobes. They weren't always hers. In fact, up until four days ago, everything was theirs.

She sighs barely registering her daughter crying in the next room, but her eyes cloud with tears as she pictures her baby girls' face, too young to understand. She could barely understand it herself though. She couldn't imagine the moment that caused all this pain. She didn't want to.

They were just so happy.

Weren't they?

Her daughters' cries had risen in volume and she couldn't bear it anymore, she went across the hall and lifted the screaming baby into her arms. She looked just like him.

'I've, um. I've got all my things sorted.'

She inwardly flinched at the sound of his voice. His perfect voice. And once again her eyes pooled with tears.

She had two options right now.

Ignore him, wait till he leaves and beg herself not to cry.

Or just slap him. In hope he could feel maybe even an ounce of what she is.

But she doesn't want to do either.

She wants to turn around run to him and tell him it doesn't matter. That they love each other they can get past this. That she can forget she caught him sleeping with someone else.

But she can't, because she has to be strong.

'Time for you to go then isn't it?'

She's shocked at the sound of her voice. It sounded so… broken, so pained, so real.

She hears him sigh.

'Baby please…'

Those two words broke her, and silent tears pooled down her face.

She'd heard the divorce statistics. She just never though she'd become one.

She always thought they'd be the lucky ones. The ones who'd stay together forever, because they were in love. Maybe their love wasn't as strong as she thought. Maybe it was but it just faded over time. That might be true on his part. But a part of her knew deep down, she'd always love him. She would have always been allowed to. If he hadn't screwed everything up that is.

His two words may have broken her. But her next two destroyed her.

'Goodbye Nate.'

It's just not fair.
