Chapter 1: Surprise!

He was late! He was never- okay so he was usually late but this time he really tried to be on time! Nothing was going right at all today. It all started when he woke up late because his alarm didn't go off, so he didn't have time to get his usual donut. As he raced around trying to find his other shoe, which somehow got in the stove, he put on his infamous trench coat and rushed out the door. As he was walking down the stairs from the third level apartment he remembered that he didn't bring money for lunch, but he had no time to go back and get some he was already late. This was not turning out to be good day. And it was his birthday for goodness sake!
When he finally got in the building it was already two hours after he had to be in. He was out of breath and his stomach hurt from running so long. Tatsumi was already walking over to him, face locked in his lecture face.
"Tsuzuki! You are two hours late! Time is money! Where have you been?"
Tsuzuki's face fell, he didn't even say happy birthday. "My alarm didn't go off this morning."
"Well you will be working over time today to make up for lost time. Now get into the meeting room we have a case to work on."
"Aww. Tatsumiiii! Don't be so harsh! Its my-"
"I need to be harsh with you or else you don't learn! Now go in a please work diligently."
Head down and totally saddened Tsuzuki walked into the meeting room. All the while not noticing the slight smile on Tatsumi's face.
Mentally preparing himself for the anger of the chief and snide remarks on his work ethic from Hisoka, he opened the door.
"Surprise!"
Tsuzuki looked up and was shocked. Everyone was there and there was cake! And Apple Pie! They did remember his birthday! They were just pretending to now remember! As he looked around Hisoka came up to him and leaned up and gave him a small kiss on the lips.
"Surprise Tsuzuki."
Maybe this birthday wasn't so bad after all.
"So Tsuzuki. Were you surprised when you got here?" asked the chief in rare kindness.
"Ahh yes..-" Tsuzuki started to say.
"Good now get back to work!!" the chief yelled suddenly.
Mouth open in slight surprise, Tsuzuki stood and started toward the door wondering what it was he was supposed to be doing. More than a little depressed, he opened the office door but was stopped by a hand on his shoulder. When he looked Hisoka was looking up at him with an unreadable expression on his face.
"Hisoka? What..?"
"You were late you idiot."
"What?! I'll have you know that my alarm didn't go off today!" He cried out indignantly. This turned out to be exactly how he thought it would! Was the party just a dream?!
With a slight smile Hisoka walked past him, "Happy Birthday, Tsuzuki."
