WORDS OF A FALLEN EMPEROR

One-shot. Deathfic. Rated T for death.

Lelouch vi Britannia has a few extra words to say before he dies - how will they affect his image as the Demon Emperor, the ultimate symbol of evil?

It hurt to breathe.

His lungs gasped for air weakly as his blood pooled around him, leaking from the sword wound in his chest. Suzaku hadn't hesitated, and he was glad. As the mysterious masked vigilante, Zero, his friend had erased the very symbol of hatred in this tiresome world. It would finally be peaceful, just like he envisioned; the world that both Nunnally and Euphemia had dreamed of creating.

His strength was waning rapidly. A half-smile stretched his lips - he was dying. He would be free from this cursed life at last. It was a highly appealing thought.

He felt Nunnally grasp his bloody hand with hers. She cried out, her voice clogged with desperation, "Brother, I love you!"

"I know…" he whispered. He took a shuddering, rattling breath as he continued, "I… destroy worlds… to create worlds…"

With the remaining energy he could muster, he turned to look at his distraught sister. By now the crowds of people witnessing his downfall were so quiet that a pin would be heard if dropped. The Demon Emperor, in his last moments, looked so human that they unanimously decided to listen to his last words.

"Nunnally? I lied. I did this… for you. Do you… forgive me?" his words prompted fresh tears to roll down his sister's cheeks.

"Of course!" she sobbed, and flung herself on top of his bloody body.

"Good," he murmured, feeling the last dredges of energy being sapped away by his approaching death. "I'm going… to sleep now. I'm so tired… of everything…" His eyelids slid closed for the final time.

"I love you… Nunnally…" He smiled.

Then Lelouch vi Britannia, the 99th Emperor of the Holy Empire of Britannia, died. Nunnally screamed in despair as her beloved older brother was taken from her. She freely let her tears drip on to her brother's body. The smile was still on his face.

The people were in shock. Suddenly everyone, not just those who had known him personally or as the leader of the Black Knights, understood what Lelouch's true intentions had been. He had sacrificed everything to become the embodiment of hatred in their eyes, and by having Zero kill him, Zero's reputation as the ally of justice would be permanently solidified. The sight of Nunnally weeping over the dead emperor wrenched at their hearts. The emperor was cast into a new light; he had become a martyr, taking in all of their hate and rage and despair so the world would be a better place.

The Demon Emperor was no more. All that was left was the broken body of a boy who had been thrust into a life that caused him endless troubles. He smiled in death; had he ever truly been a demonic man in the first place? Or had it simply been a façade?

The funeral was held a week later.

Lelouch vi Britannia was finally laid to rest.

After watching the last episode of the second season, I just couldn't get this out of my head. Yes, I know it's short, but the main focus is on Lelouch's death. Review?
