AN: I swear I'm not depressed! I just read a lovely poem built kind of on this format, and I thought instead of applying to the death of a father, it would work really well applied to the death of a jounin-sensei, which, it's made fairly clear, is a traumatizing event in the ninja world. And with all the fanfic plotlines involving Kakashi's death and failing to put in one of those pithy aphorisms that are always cited at real-world funerals ('Your father was a good man'; 'We'll miss your cousin'; etc.), I thought it would be neat to explore the Hidden Nation alternatives.

Your sensei dies, say the Kiri-nin, so that his body's water may sustain your own.

May you inherit his fire, say the Konohans.

When your sensei dies, say the Kumo-nin, his voice is the thunder.

May you walk in his flame, say the Konohans.

When your sensei dies, say the Iwa-nin, your last fortress has fallen.

May you burn with his passion, say the Konohans.

When your sensei dies, the Suna-nin say, It was his time, as one day it will be yours.

May The Will burn bright in you as in him, say the Konohans.

When your sensei dies, say the Oto-nin, he has lost the battle and won the war.

May his fire be your light, say the Konohans.

When your sensei dies, say the Kusa-nin, he returns to the root of all things.

May his flame burn in you on your darkest day, say the Konohans.

Your sensei died, said the Uzu-nin, as he lived; brave, honorable, and deadly.

When your sensei dies, say the Konohans, he has passed his fire to you,

And so he lives forever, here within.
