Chapter 1

The side of the bed that my dear little sister Prim sleeps on is cold. She must have had nightmares, todays the day of the reaping, her first one actually. I fling my legs over the side of the bed and pad softly out of my room. Our little shack in the seam of District 12, the poorest district in all of Panem, is silent except for the occassional soft snores of my mother. I see Prim at the top of the stairs looking down at me. "Katniss" She asks, "Where are you going?""I'm going out, I'll be back in a bit alright" I reply. She nods. Pulling on the soft leather of the hunting jacket my father gave me when I was younger, I head towards the fence that surrounds District 12. Technically, the fence is supposed to be electrified 24/7 and it is in the richer districts, but here, we're lucky to get an hour or two in the evenings. Most nights we spend reading by candlelight and tuck in early during the winter.

As I approach the fence, I listen carefully for any signs that the fence is live but the barbs are silent. I find the hole I normally use to get under the fence and slide through. I dart into the woods, a habit of mine, and search for the tree that I store my quiver of arrows and a bow my father hand crafted for me. They've been wrapped in a waterproof bag to protect them from the elements, this I peel off and store back in the tree. The mockingjays call to one another in the tree tops as I walk along, searching for signs of game and checking the snare trail. Thats when I see it; a young buck in its prime, the points of his crown are absolutely majestic. I load the bow and am about to let fly an arrow when a voice behind me scares the buck off. "And just what exactly where you going to do with that? You can't go lugging a dear carcass through the district on reaping day, Catnip, there'll be Peace keepers everywhere" My best friend Gale, says. I sigh and narrow my eyes at him. He's one of those boys that girls go crazy over. Although, if someone didn't know, they could say we were cousins. We both have the typical olive tones to our skin and gray eyes.
