Forever Cold
'What Has to Be Done'
The galaxy is full of vile, selfish creatures. It was time for him to act.
Doctor H'dean Serek, a Romulan scientist, stood at the very top of the promenade, furious. The bottom level was pack with arriving aliens. Such diversity, such uniqueness and talent; even young children, who may have just met, are already friends-only made what had to be done harder. But he knew he had no other recourse.
He had asked, and the Federation ignored. It enraged him. I must do what has to done.
He started walking along the metal walkway, moving mechanically. Despite the hot and humid temperature, he was cold. Great, I'm in shock already, was his side thought. That didn't matter. He had long ago master keeping his mind and reactions in focus.
As he walk, he looked down at the chaos below. All the shops were abuzz with customers. They were happy and carefree. Serek had lost his home world. He was a member of an endangered species, and these people partied like nothing has happened. They will all be dead soon.
Suddenly, he wasn't sure he could go through with it.
The Ferengi establishment, where some sort of party was going on. A stream of people flowed in and out(mostly drunken). Over the loud singing and voice, he heard it again. Serek knew, he heard many times before on the evacuation ships, because the sorrow that filled him was so very real.
He heard a child's wail. A little human girl, all alone, stood in the middle of the walkway. She was crying hysterically. Momentarily distracted from his mission he walked over to the weeping girl. He keeled down on one knee and put his hands on the little girls shoulders.
"Where's your parents?" He asked.
She looked at him with fear and confusion still swimming in his eyes. She pointed to the party below. The answer came in tear filled spasms, "Daddy, down there."
"Did he leave you with someone to watch you?"
"-sniffle- No, he said stay here."
The Bastard! Due to new regulations enacted by the new Commander of Deep Space Nine, children were not permitted when the sell of alcohol and gambling was permitted. So, he deducted, the father just left his child here. Oh, how he hated humans.
Serek could just imagine the young man drawn to the prospect of ale and money. Instant gratification. Humans were so pathetic. They were quick to abandon their family for pleasure.
He stood and took the girls hand. The girl, who was only sobbing know, looked up at him.
"Don't worry dear, you'er coming with me."
The girl shock her head. "Daddy said to stay here."
Despite his current mindset, despite what he was about to do; he smiled. "Don't worry, I will keep you safe until your father is done." The girl nodded her head in agreement and began to walk with him.
Together, they left the promenade and walked to his lab.
In his lab, he sat the girl on one of the examining tables, "Stay." he said to her. He walk over to his computer console. He was sickened by what he was about to set in motion. If I falter, I'm no better then the rest.
He was better.
He pressed a bottom on the console, and entered a code: it was done. In moments, the virus would be released on the selected victims. They would be dead within hours, and then come back.
An immediate danger. A statement.
The Galaxy will take notice now.
