I wrote this for Astronauts' 'Song to a Story' challenge. This is my first attempt at a Forum Challenge, so bear with me here. It is written to 'Run' by Vampire Weekend.
Harry found her sitting near the water, feet buried in the wet sand. From a distance, she was barely there at all, her pale skin and sandy hair blending into the cream of the sand. Luna was humming to some strange tune, tapping her long fingers on her jean-clad legs. He meandered over and sat down next to her. She didn't seem to notice that he was even there. He reached out to touch her on the shoulder.
"It's a hymn," Luna said, making Harry jump "My Dad and I would hum it every night to keep the Jillywops away." He stared at her quizzically "You know, Jillywops? They fly in through your window at night and give you the hiccups. It's very dangerous to hiccup when one is asleep." She stared off into the sunset "Of course, the humming scares them away. I think it must have something to do with the way the sound comes from your nose..." Luna drifted off again, staring at some unseen point in the clouds.
"Well, dinner is ready. Fleur made some sort of soup. Jombom et Pwaah or something. She wants me to be well fed for when we set out tomorrow-"
"Do you ever get sick of doing this same old thing over and over again, Harry?" Luna asked, her lilting Irish accent sending a wave of happiness over him.
"Sick of what?" He smiled slightly, raising his eyebrows.
"All this going in circles. You mostly work to live. All this chasing You-know-who... You must get tired of it."
"There's nowhere else to go..." Harry shrugged off the idea "There's nothing else I can do..."
"You could run. Away from it all I mean. I could go with you. We could get out of the country, go somewhere else far away. Africa, Australia, America. I hear there are lots of nice penguins in Antarctica. It would do you some good." She tilted her head slightly and smiled "Anywhere. Think about it Harry..."
Luna had never seen Harry look so surprised.
"It wouldn't be easy..." He reasoned, with that tone of uncertainty only she could hear.
"We could try. It would be an adventure. I know you like those a lot..."
Harry leaned back onto the sand and closed his eyes. He would leave with Luna in a heartbeat. Whimsical, Esoteric Luna. He could imagine that. The pair of them in a beat up old car, driving down a long road, Luna's long hair flying behind her, with nothing but each other and a battered up radio playing muggle songs from the seventies.
Cause honey with you
Is the only honest way to go
And I could take two
If I really couldn't ever know
Honey with you
And battered radio
We could try
He turned his head back to Luna and smiled softly. It was wishful thinking, they both knew it. Harry glanced at his watch.
"Merlin, we were supposed to be back ten minutes ago. Fleur's not going to be happy with us," Harry look over his shoulder. He could see a faint blob of a house that was those cottage in the distance. "We'll never get back before dark, any way..."
Luna helped him off the ground, a cheeky smile forming on her face.
"Run."
