Summary: A short piece about Des/Kate the night he returns to the island

He sat on the beach not far from her. He was noticeably drunk and she could smell him from where she stood. But there was something about him. There was something sad and knowing in his eyes. He was still all there. Not like Wayne had been all those nights that he'd come home reeking of whiskey and smoke. Desmond was still aware. He was still talking to the people who approached him. He was still a decent man, even if he was soaking every fiber in his body with Dharma scotch.

He had escaped. Very briefly, he had gotten away from the island, only to find out that he couldn't escape. She understood the sadness in his eyes. This place had been his prison for four years, and now it would hold him for the rest of his life. She was sure the same look would be reflected in her eyes. She had spent her life running, and now she couldn't. Neither of them had anywhere to go.

She smiled bitterly to herself as she wandered over to him. Not to ask him more about his failed voyage home, but to join him in his journey to the bottom of the bottle.
