Sadie
I heard a piercing cry. It would have shocked me anyway, but I knew that cry. Carter. Isis, no. I had heard this cry months ago after the Tjesu Heru poisoning, and now. I knew that cry like the back of my hand. It was Carter crying out in pain. Intense, Oh my Ra this sucks! kind of pain. And I didn't like it.
I ran into the training room. Carter was on the ground, clutching his arm like his secret name depended on it. I plopped down on the floor and gently pried his hand off of his arm. He weakly cried out in protest, and I felt a tear in my eye. Seeing him like this hurt me. And my brother was never like this. His head dug into my shoulder, and I gasped at what I saw.
First, Carter's right arm was broken. Second, that wrist was also broken. His bone was sticking out of his skin. There was so much blood…
"WHAT THE BLOODY HELL HAPPENED?" I yelled.
"I-I- don't know!" Walt stammered. "A wind just picked him up and slammed him into the wall. I don't know what the hell happened."
Bast rushed in. "Infirmary. NOW!" she yelled.
She gently picked up my older brother. He gasped and cried out at the sudden movement. Bast sighed.
"It will be okay, my tomcat. Take it easy."
Carter had his forehead on her shoulder. He let out another agonizing cry of pain. I winced.
She ran into the infirmary with him, like, well, a cat. We sprinted after her. By the time she laid him down, he had fallen unconscious. That's how I knew this was bad. Carter never passes out, even if I do. I liked that about him.
She put her hand on his arm and whispered something in Egyptian. Just like on the plane, so long ago. The bone went back into his skin, leaving only a long white scar.
I watched as unconsciousness eased into sleep. I flopped down on the bed next to him. His head rested on my shoulder, his features slack and eased. Gods. These moments never happen in the Kane family.
"Go away." I told Walt.
He shrugged and walked out of the room, leaving me with my sleeping brother.
Normally, I would've shrugged Carter off. I mean, he was sleeping on my shoulder! But I decided not to. After what he had just been through, Gods. Let the boy have some peace. I didn't have the heart to push him away. Bast looked over and smiled at Carter's relaxed form.
"How did you know?" she asked.
"Know what?"
"That he was hurt."
"I heard him cry. And that's bad. I know that cry like my own hand."
"That is very good, Sadie. Good senses."
"How did you know that he was hurt?" I asked her.
"I heard you yell." She said with a smirk.
I laughed, and shifted so Carter's forehead stayed on my collarbone. He muttered something incoherent and tried to turn, but I caught him and gently shoved him back. He twitched, but didn't wake up. Normally, I would've kicked his ass by now.
Jaz dashed in, breathing heavily. "How is he?" she asked.
"Fine," I answered. "He's sleeping."
"Good," she breathed. "Thanks, Bast."
"No prob." She sprinted out to the roof and jumped.
I shrugged Carter off gently. I ran to the Sekhmet fountain, and caught water in a glass. I ran back to Carter. He sipped the water, blinked, and opened his eyes.
"Right!" I yelled. "No more hitting walls!"
"Sorry," he said. "Wind blew in, and-"
"It's okay. I just had to keep up my rep."
"Bla, bla, bla." Carter said. He stretched, and, blushing, took his head off my shoulder. I smirked as he got up.
I guess miracles do happen.
