Author's Note: Heyo, this is my first fanfic, though I've been reading fanfics for years now. It's something that just came barging into my head, screaming to be written. Hope you guys enjoy it. Just for fun, so rated K.
Why are your eyes gold?
"Merlin?"
"Yes, Sire?"
"Why are your eyes gold?"
"No, they're not. It's just the light."
"It's not the light. When I looked around they were gold. In fact, they still are."
Merlin took a deep breath. He knew this day would come. He should have expected this, yet he had hoped that the prince wouldn't find out this way.
"Arthur, there's something I have to tell you."
Arthur waited, tensed.
"Arthur, I'm…"
Arthur couldn't take it anymore. What was the idiot going to say? He opened his mouth but Merlin spoke first.
"…wearing contact lenses."
Arthur didn't know he'd been holding his breath that long. "You're what?"
"I'm wearing contact lenses!" Merlin replied cheerfully. "It's the newest fad! Even Morgana wore them when she took over the throne. I mean, I think she was actually the one that started the trend. Haven't you noticed how her eyes sometimes appeared darker?"
Arthur nodded, agreeing with him.
"You should probably get one, too before the stores run out. I mean, I heard even Morgause wore a pair. I think she had some in blue and red. Not sure really. Too busy dodging her magic."
Arthur thought it over, but something in him was angry. "Well, why didn't you tell me? How could you? I trusted you and all this time… You've been walking around with contact lenses without telling me! Imagine the Prince of Camelot, now Regent – not knowing the latest fashion trend in his kingdom!"
Merlin sputtered. "I-I'm sorry, Arthur. But don't worry, see – I bought you a pair!"
Arthur instantly brightened up. "Really? What color are they in?"
"Red. I know it's your favorite color. Plus it'll make you look cool."
Merlin gave it to him. Arthur looked ecstatic. "The Pendragon color! This will look amazing with my red cloak and red jacket!"
"Of course, Sire."
"Merlin," Arthur said solemnly, resting a hand on Merlin's shoulder. "I knew I could count on you. You have always been such a true and loyal friend."
