They had a very healthy, productive relationship. They would go to clubs and movies and imagine that they were "normal."
Then her best friend was murdered, and so was his, and the club hopping and movie nights stopped.
Their relationship was now tenuous, at best. She couldn't be as tactile because barely a thread held her desire in check. He couldn't look her in the eye lest he see the lingering disappointment and reproach thinly veiled by hurt and despair.
The façade of friendship stayed anchored in place while they slowly drifted apart in the sea of helplessness and heartache.
