It was five days ago. When I woke up, my family was gone.
He strokes the cocker spaniel's tangled fur, thinking of the time she must have spent on Berlin's wintry streets.
At first I thought they might come back. All their things were still there. My young mistress left her coat lying in the middle of the living room.
Behind him, the other pets stir and murmur, assuring the new arrival that she would be happy in the Count's shop.
It was her favorite one, too. Dark green, with a six-pointed yellow star on the left front pocket.
"I see." He says. Because what else was there left to say?
