Partners

Amy sighed, looking up at the ceiling. The pale moonlight gave enough light that she could count the cracks in the ceiling - two holes, five cracks, and a molding job that looked suspiciously like a shark.

The alarm clock's red face illuminated the late time. She was glad to be the only female in the group; it meant she had her own hotel room and wouldn't keep anyone awake. This insomnia wasn't new to her; it had started months before, getting worse with each night. She was used to company, used to a warm body next to her - used to Kris.

It was that bad, at first, when Kris left for GHI. She was rarely gone, and even then only for a small period of a time. Then the cases started coming in, and she was gone for longer periods of time; barely in the states long enough to say hello. They had been together for so long, it was odd to be apart.

With a sigh, she rolled over and grabbed her phone, sending a text message. She knew Kris was on a plane to Germany, and hopefully she was still up. As if on cue, her phone vibrated once, then twice - a call instead of a text.

"Hey."

"Hey. You're supposed to be sleeping."

Amy chuckled. "Yeah, I know."

"You guys done with the investigation?"

"Yeah. The guys wanted to spend the rest of the day exploring, so we stayed a little longer. We'll be leaving in the morning."

"Then maybe you'll get some sleep."

"Yeah, maybe." Amy let out a sigh. "I miss you."

"I miss you too, sweetie. I was going to wait until I got back, but I guess I can tell you now."

"What are you talking about?"

"I got us tickets to that cruise you wanted to go on."

Amy sat up fast, her eyes wide in disbelief. "You mean that Caribbean one?"

Kris chuckled. "That's the one."

"But…how? I thought it was sold out!"

Amy could practically hear her grin. "Never underestimate me. I actually pre-ordered the tickets."

"But they went sale three months ago! You've been keeping it a secret this whole time?"

"Of course."

Amy chuckled. "You are amazing."

"Of course I am."

"And arrogant too." Amy chuckled, which quickly turned into a yawn.

"Get some sleep sweetie, I'll be home soon."

Amy nodded, mostly to herself, her eyes drooping. "Love you."

"I love you too. Sweet dreams."

They were partners, in work and in life; separation wasn't going to change that.
