Butterflies

Izaya Orihara felt sick.

For the past couple of days, his stomach refused to take in food, turning, sometimes to the point of nausea, if he so much as ate Pocky. Not that he was hungry, no. His ability to feel that particular sensation had disappeared at the same time his digestive problem started, and the trouble was beginning to gnaw at his patience.

That morning, in a moment of weakness, he had gone to Shinra's house for an examination, much to the delight of the underground doctor (and the dismay of his headless cohabitant). Half a day later though, the same look of perplexity was still on Shinra's face, and the first tendrils of irritation were beginning to creep up on the informant.

"It's probably just a stomach bug," his friend had told him when the tests came up with nothing. "It'll be gone in a few days."

And now, hours afterwards, he was wandering the streets of Ikebukuro, kicking a pebble in front of him in an attempt to amuse himself. Now that he thought about it, he probably got it from that very city, right after his cat-and-mouse chase with Shizuo. He stopped dead in his tracks.

That was it. It had been one of the rare moments of extreme luck when Shizuo was able to catch up to him, when he had grabbed Izaya's hand and nearly hurled him across the city, if only he hadn't slipped out of the bartender's grasp just in time. There had been a warm, tingling feeling in his hand afterwards, which Izaya dismissed as a result of getting manhandled by the blond. That must have been the beginning of the virus.

He should have known Shizuo was to blame for all of this.

Before he could so much as sigh at his latest revelation, a familiar voice brought him out of his musings.

"I-za-ya-kun," Shizuo strode towards him, the whine of metal filling the night as he ripped a nearby lamppost from the concrete. "I thought I told you never to show your face in Ikebukuro!"

"Now, now, Shizu-chan," he said. "Aren't you happy I came to see you?"

It wasn't until Izaya avoided the flying streetlight and accidentally caught Shizuo's eye that he finally realized just what kind of bug he had.

Butterflies.

A/N: Thank you for reading! This was actually for one of my classes, but I like the idea of Shizaya, so I posted it on here as well. I hope you liked it!
