It was an ordinary night in Downtown City, and during tonight, Blythe, in her pajamas, spent some quality time with pets on her bed in her bedroom. They were all introduced to a new game, allegedly developed by Russell. He places it in front of them. It was only a plain box, which frankly looked too bland to be familiar.
Pepper was the first to show some interest, "You made this?"
"Yup. I told you before about it, remember?"
"Yes, I am as excited as the last eight times you did."
"I think it was nine," suggested a hyperactive pink spider monkey named Minka.
Vinnie felt defeated, "I don't remember."
Russell rolled his eyes. "Guessing that is not the game's purpose. It wouldn't even make a good sub-game."
"So how do we win?"
Russell held up an index finger to signal for some silence. Just before he would open the box, Roger opens Blythe's door and interrupts.
Roger greeted. "You alright?"
Blythe turned to him with a smile, "Yeah, you?"
"Well, tired. Had a longer shift because of a sick co-worker. And the fastest route to work was closed. Couldn't catch a break."
"Too bad."
"What are you doing with the pets and a box?"
Here comes the awkwardness, "Would you believe me if I said we were going to play a boardgame?"
"Maybe," her dad luckily joked, "but do that tomorrow, the pets need to return."
"Ok, goodnight."
"Night," He shut the door.
"Sorry," Blythe apologized, "you heard my dad."
Russell sighed and took the box. "I suppose."
Blythe returned the pets to each of their owners, which took some time and running around, but it felt nice and peaceful once that was all over. Withdrawing to her room, she felt like staying up, so she chose to surf the web on her laptop.
Two more girls who were staying up were Whittany and Brittany, both in their pajamas too, laying on their bed in their house's bedroom and staring blankly at their ceiling in boredom.
"Brittany?" Whittany said.
"Uh-huh?" Brittany was texting on her phone.
"I'm so bored."
"I was gonna text you that," Brittany deleted the text she would send and put away her phone. Their pets, Cashmere and Velvet, enter the room and get on the beds, thirsting for affection. The girls sit up and Brittany pets Velvet while Whittany holds Cashmere. It reminded and made Brittany wonder about Blythe and the pets she's with.
"Isn't Blythe, like, always with her pets?"
Whittany turned to her momentarily, "Not really. We never see them at school."
"Yeah but when we're not at school, you know?"
"Let me think about it."
Some time passes.
"You're right," Whittany finally recalled, "Can't believe she's not sick yet from their germs. Maybe she's an animal herself."
Brittany laughed at that. Meanwhile, Whittany thought if the pets hang out with Blythe so much, they are probably attached to her. Are their own pets attached to them too? It would be hard to know, so she asked for thoughts from Brittany.
"Do you think Cashmere and Velvet love us?"
Brittany didn't give that much thought, rather she doesn't think herself. She sees their pets look happy and comfortable, so it seems safe to say yes.
"I guess."
Small doubt remained in Whittany. It was maybe just a case of overthinking, so she let it slide and laid back on her bed, "I'm so fricking bored!"
When they thought the boringness would last a good hour, their door was knocked.
"Come in," said Whittany.
François LeGrande, their butler, enters to make an announcement. "Girls, your father wants a word in the living room."
"What word does he want?" Asked Brittany. Whittany laughed at that – François didn't.
"I think you know what I mean."
"Ok, we'll go," confirmed Whittany.
François closes the door and left.
"Hope we're not in trouble," worried Brittany.
"Dunno, I'm just too lazy to go."
It took them a good few minutes to build up enough energy to place their pets on the bed and make their way to see what their dad wanted to have a word with them about.
